I'm keen to detect any faults as soon as possible during an install and theferfore I'd be very interested to hear what tests others carry out during installation (not after), at what stage (e.g.. after 1st fix) and the reasoning behind this (what type of problem would be detected).

Many thanks.

Not sure there is really much you can do until 2nd fix.

if your thinking you need to test then possibly you have an inkling to why / where you may have an issue. so address the issue

its very unlikely you'll damage a cable without noticing it.

Maybe friction burn when pulling a cable against another, but if you leave enough space that shouldnt happen.

Suppose you could ins res test it if you worried about a cable. If its going under a tiled floor or something

if you were doing a major rewire i suppose you could 'ins res' the rings before the plasterer gets in

same with the lights and switches

but i think most of us dont bother

How would you do IR at 1st Fix?

You would need to strip and test each length of cable between points which you wont connect untill 2nd fix. Pretty pointless exercise I would say.

Only Test recommended is test on cable drum before pulling in, never done it always use BASIC approved and trust its ok.

did this on a drum of 2.5 t+e (Hannai,,Denmans stocked it) and a 50m drum only just above 100megohms

it went back

different brand over 1000meg

Thanks to all for your thoughts and for your time.

I didn't have any particular problems in mind but just thinking that the earlier a fault was found the earlier/easier/cheaper it could be fixed. But have to agree that it's probably only practical to ensure you take care and use good installation methods to avoid any issues further down the line.

Cheers.
