hi all

sorry if this seems a basic question but what test do you carry out to check for shared neutrals? i've done it many moons before but can't quite remember as i mainly do new builds lately, having a blonde day

Test for continuity between neutrals on different circuits. There shouldn;t be any.

Or do you mean borrowed neutrals? If so testing for them isn't always doable, not easily anyway. A lot of variables, but the common one is the landing light so it's easy enough to test what is connected to what if there's split up\down lighting circuits.

There's a thread on this subject somewhere else from quite recentyl, I'm surprised it didn;t come up when you were typing the subject of this thread in.

hmmm this subject is confusing

do you mean you have 2 neutrals at the fuseboard that have inadvertantly been connected to each other out in the "field"?

coffee ;)

a borrowed neutral i'd call as a circuit or spur having no neutral at the board but connected to another circuits neutral.

agree?

i guess there is less of an accepted term for "cross connected neutrals"

I would look at it as

One circuit supplied by TWO fuses or circuit breakers.

Such that BOTH fuses/breakers must be isolated to make the circuit safe!

Obvious this arrangement does NOT comply with regs!

+1

a few angles eh SL

one method would be to isolate one circuit and remove neutral from busbar. turn all lights on. if this neutral is live at any point, borrowed neutral. then test again with other circuit isolated

Wandering lead from CU neutral to all points on circuit, then same with live, should match up.
