work and home, staying with my mum, she is petrified. Found out that a sit on mower was pinched from My local pub. I have 2 baseball bats in my bedroom, one wood one aluminium, if I found out who did it I am gonna use the wooden one on them. At least with the thudding sound it makes on contact I know I have belted him one.

Baseball bat is no good, it can be classed as a weapon, whereas an offcut of say 16mm 4 core SWA seems to be an acceptable substitute

Sorry to here that Andy these thieves make you sick they are either on drugs looking for stuff to feed there habit or diddies looking for an easy living. There argument is well the stuff they nick is insured. But generally even if it is you won't get the replacment cost so it will cost you a lot. I really feel for you.

Sorry to hear what happened I hope your insurance company see fit to pay out on the contents insurance.

A baseball bat is not a weapon its a sporting aid just carry the ball at the same time and tell the police you missed the pitch and hit his face, no intention just an accident officer.

If the police did their job right and the do gooders let us jail them all we could all live peacefully.

people should have more right to protect their property.... you should be able to install traps etc. breaking in is illegal... although in this country protecting your property can be even more illegal

I can think of many ways to treat the scum who do this type of thing... none of them politically correct or legal. Fishing line stretched around with lots of hooks comes to mind as one way to trap a scroat. A mate of mine did this behind the dash of his car to get radio thieves.

As far as beating them goes, 4x16mmSWA would work OK, but it's a bit heavy. A length of cable sheathing about the size of 4x16mmSWA is better as you can get a faster terminal velocity due to the lighter weight and more of a stinging hit instead of a bone-breaking hit. The sheath also curls around the victim, increasing the length of the area being hit. When I was a kid (not here in the UK) I had a piece of polythene telephone cable sheath, about 30mm diameter, I carried on my pushbike for attending to dogs that chased bikes. Very effective on snarlers and equally effective on muggers.
