ok, so you take an old pendant down and the ceiling is falling to bits, the old fixings have had it and if you try and put a plasterboard fixing in the ceiling will just crumble.

what do you do?

try and get some timber in the hole?

That's what I'd do, but it can be pretty ackward at times! It's better if you can get the plasterboard fixing to work.

Screw through the plaster into a joist if possible.

This isn't for one of those lights with a fan is it?

I have used small off cuts of timber then filled around any holes with filler or fire foam to hold everything in place.

spring toggles can utilize a pretty big hole and give a decent fixing

i think i might have to start carrying some timber in the van, time get more inventive with what space i have in the van!

Depending on the light fitting and the ceiling, you could fit a round dry lining box.

few short bits of wood are useful. i carry 2x1 and some off cuts of 1x1. you can usually get a length 120-140mm through the hole onto good ceiling and screw into that

when i have had a fixing problem I tie a bit of string around the block befor you push it into the hole and pull down while you screw up into it.
