They do seem to NOT want to talk to you.

Me and SWMBO both submitted our tax returns in April.  Mine came back in just a few weeks so I know what my tax bill, payable by the end of January would be. But there was no sign on any correspondence re SWMBO's tax return, So we thought it was time to phone them to at least check it had been received and was being processed.

I think it took SWMBO over an hour on the phone, mostly listening the the same short bit of canned musak before she got to speak to someone who finally confirmed it had been received and was being processed but could not say how long it would be.

Then a week later a payment landed in her bank account from HMRC.  It was nearly a week later that the paperwork arrived showing here PAYE employer had over charged her tax and she was due a refund.  Her PAYE employment (part time)  is below the tax threshold so why they had deducted any is a mystery. It was only her property income that pushed her over the tax threshold.

NOT a very professional service at all.

My mother was a book-keeper and I used to admire her approach to HMRC, even when retired and only dealing with pensions, savings, ISAs etc.

She used to ring them and tell them what she owed.

If their figure was a penny different, she demanded to know how they had calculated it. I like to think that they dreaded her call!

I waited about 15 mins  with the Muzac  on speakerphone   until it was answered ...at least is was a Geordie  , I was expecting India .

I outlined my query to be told he doesn't  "do Self Employed"   .
