Under Floor Heating Centre

hello all,

an under floor heating install has been put in a property..

it con sites of 5 zones for each room

1 manifold

1wiring centre

5 stats in each room

we have ran a 3 core cable to each room from the wiring centre (ths is placed next to the manifold)

another 3 core has been run to the boiler.

230v fcu has been installed for power of the wiring centre.

the actuator with 4 cores goes in wet areas and where wooden flooring will be provided.

now..... there are 5 actuators, 3 have just to cores and 2 have 4 cores (blue, Brown, black, grey). in the out put in the wiring centre there is only 2 terminals for these to go.

does any one one know how the other cores plays a part in this?

depends a lot on the panel, best read the instructions on this one methinks.

well the bloke who came to commission it today didn't even have a clue about it.. he said he has only seen 2 core actuators.

do u think i may have to install a perm live feed to the brown and blue and use the grey and black as the switch wires?

i need some one with a lil expereince in this. i havnt seen a 4 core actuator b4 to.

More information please.

I've done many UFH systems. All different, but what they have in common is their own manifold controller.

So next to the manifold, you have some form of manifold controller. the room thermostats connect to this, and the manifold actuators also connect to this, at least one per room, but often larger rooms have more than one heating loop so may have more than one manifold actuator.

There's usually a pump on the manifold, again connected to the manifold controller.

If any room stat "calls for heat" then the manifold controller will turn on the manifold pump and open the manifold valves for that room.

the mainfold controller will also output a "call for heat" usually in the form of a volt free contact to turn on a boiler, or turn on a pump or valves (e.g if using a heat store system)

Reading your post, the "2 core" actuators go on the manifold valves and are controlled by the manifold controller. The other two would be wired just like any other heating system to control heat flow from the boiler to the manifold.

One thing I have found common to any system I have yet done, is they usually supply pretty good documentation.

surly the actuator only need 2 cores to switch it on?

Well assume they are incorrect and should be 2 core, what make is the system.

Test them with an ohm meter?

I'm guessing the brown and blue are just like the others, the actuator coil, so should measure similar resistance.

the other two may be a feedback contact, and would probably be either open, or short circuit at rest.

If the brown and blue test the same resistance, then just use them and ignore the other two cores.

Or phone and ask the supplier. Again I have usually found them helpful. But I've not heard of giacomini

i have tried that. i left the two cores out . but the actuator didn't open. iv called they said he will get some one to contact me, they don't know whats going on.
