can some one explain why I am getting voltage readings from disconnected cables wired for a shower. Supply cable is disconnected at consumer unit end and load cable is disconnected at pull cord switch in shower room. I getting 20 - 30 volts between cores on both cables and across cores on both cables. Will this cause a problem with shower unit

Induced voltage.

Are you using a cheap meter by any chance?

To me it appears this may be leakage voltage through earth. This leakage voltage may increase once the cable is connected to the supply. It may lead to a human shock once it is >50V.

Chances are if you tested it with a moving coil meter it would show 0V.  As others have said induced voltage and nothing to worry about.

However if you are in any doubt and suspect there is something wrong then get it checked out.

Old'ish thread, OP not been on since Dec 2015, possibly not coming back. Probably best closed.
