It is reported the father-of-two was found hanged after apparently taking his own life.
A statement posted on the Welsh FA's website said: "The Football Association of Wales are sad to announce the death of the national team manager Gary Speed.
"We extend our sympathies and condolences to the family. We ask that everyone respects the family's privacy at this very sad time."
Speed also captained the national team and remains the country's most capped outfield player.
His former international team mate Robbie Savage tweeted: "The world has lost a great man in Gary speed I'm devastated spoke to him yesterday morning why ! Why. Why !! I'll miss him so much x."
Manchester United striker Michael Owen, who lives near Speed's home in Huntington, Cheshire, described the news as "tragic".
A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: "At 7.08am this morning, sunday 27 November, police were informed of an incident at Aldford Road, Huntington.
"Officers went to the scene where a 42-year-old man was found dead. There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and next of kind have been informed."
Speed won the First Division title with Leeds and also played for Everton, Newcastle, Bolton and Sheffield United - becoming the first player to make 500 appearances in the Premier League.
He was also awarded the MBE in 2010.

Just a little of Garys life:
Gary was appointed one year ago and was given the brief to prepare the Wales senior squad for qualification to the FIFA 2014 World Cup in Brazil. During his year in charge, the results and performances in the final European Championship qualifiers and friendly games suggested that there were strong grounds for optimism that the team could challenge for a place in the finals in three years time.
As a player, Gary had an exemplary career. A versatile player who could feature in midfield as well as defence, he won 85 international caps over a period of fifteen years between 1990
