Lo mate

we have a young ***** who we have sired with our old dog, he is now 10.

He is a saluki greyhound, the ***** is a greyhound bull.

Her development through the gestation period looks ok, showing all the signs of what you would expect, but here teats look inflamed and red in colour, now I know they do go reddy pink in later stages, but they look decidedly red.

I found one of the dogs licking them today which would suggest they are sore, no milk seepage as yet, so he was not after a free feed.

Is this something I should be worried about and seek advice, or would you say it was normal. If colour of dog has any bearing she is all black, I know that lighter coloured dogs do look redder in the teats.

Sorry the descriptions are very vague and any advise you can give is only based on what you can deduse from my description.

If one side feels warmer than the other she could have mastitis (inflammation/infection of the mammary glands). Do you have a thermometer?

yes, I think we have one in our first aid box, I will take some temps of each side.

Just on a related note, do these non contact thermometers work for this sort of thing or are they a bit inaccurate?

We really need a rectal body temperature!

Subjective feeling of the glands temperature should be satisfactory!

How is she in herself? Panting? Eating/drinking?

When is she due?

(oh and congratulations :) )

They are a load of rubbish.

Ear thermometers, tympanic thermometers (to the temple) or rectal body temperature are the only effective methods.

So may factors affect skin, mouth and under arm temperature they are almost meaningless.

I can find the thermometer apparently it was borrowed !

She is a healthy dog with very good bone and muscle structure, and extremly fit, we have had to try and stop her from jumping walls and fences :)

I have noticed that she drinks a lot and pants as if human heavy labour breathing.

However my other half likes the heating on full wack.

I have just examined them again and they look ok even if the base is red, there is no discomfort and any hardness I felt I would say is normal tissue.

She has about 3 weeks to go.

Hope all that helps :)

Doesn't sound too bad! Just keep an eye on things.

If she goes off colour or there is an obvious area of swelling/pain etc then take her to a vet. Mastitis can be serious.

Do you want a thermometer? (PM me ;) )

Reminds me of when my ex wife had just had our daughter nurse came to take her temperature, it was a digital one that had a blue probe and a red probe. She told her to put the blue one only in her mouth she asked why not the red one nurse and I gave her a funny look to which she said what!! then the penny clicked why it was red:p:p:p

Update.

The pups where born on thursday night, started about 9pm and continued until 09:30 friday morning.

First pup was born dead, shear pannick from mother and us, could have been saved I suppose if we had known better.

Then all others born without any drama, I stayed up all night, breaking the sacks and helping the mother to clean and kick start life.

We lost another one through the night, I guess down to exhaustion from the mother, I really dont think she realised she had popped another one out.

Then the last one was born dead.

In all she had a total litter of 11 with 8 survivors.

All in good condition, with no visible deformatives.

We have some lactol milk substitute and some really small feeding bottles but have not needed them so far, as the mother is proving to be very dedicated.

Thanks for the thermometer Apache, came in very usefull when her temp dropped just before birth.

Aww Bless.

A pic of the proud Mum and her Young, would be appreciated. :D
