last time I did it there were no pyro tools, Had to strip it with long nose pliers, ring it with a pair of snips, thread the pot on with pliers. Crimping the seal on with 2 pairs of grips. Then I discovered joistripper - fantastic!

I must be the exception then....I really like doing Pyro! Joistripper and a crimping tool that is made out of some converted Mole Grips [actually made by BICC]...job done! Having said that, I havn't done any for years so 'time' may have clouded my memory... :coat

Anybody here remember AlCuMicc? now that was carp!!!!!!

Been about 2years since I last did mine, on an airfield hanger for the snow ploughs. I enjoy making the ends off until I've done about 4 and then it becomes a pain!

Oh, I almost forgot, the joys of meggering it and then getting a belt off it when you go to touch it again.

Thats the only testing we ever did when i was younger. Loop testers & Ze/s had not been thought of, RCD's were these new things every one had been taught, but no one had seen. Bring back the bell set !

Last time I did some it was for the RAF in their housing estates in the 90's for some reason they insisted on a 10mm 3c MICC for the garage supply! We had a very cocky apprentice and I remember him boasting about how good he was at pyro. So we watched him strip it, thread the pot on, fill it with compound, crimp the seal, fit neoprene sleeving. Then we dropped the bombshell - "what about the gland and shroud?" he never bragged again!

I'm not old enough to remember it, but come across it in a few buildings of a certain vintage. Thankfully not had to touch it yet, but hear its a right pain and will snap at the drop of a hat if you're not bloody carful?

Just to add , I don't mind working with pyro , I still have one of those Mole wrench all round crimpers but never really bothered with it . Always stuck with the three point crimp, ringing tool and the Fits All Sizes stripping bar . There were only two makes for years , BICC and Pyrotenax (hence the term Pyro) then AEI appeared , or they had bought out Pyro perhaps.

Exellent current carrying capacity so a ring main would be in 2L1.5

I agree with what Slipper Slapper says , the only testing we ever did was to megger Pyro ends , and because of the nature of the cable , it used to charge up like a capacitor , used to spash it down to earth before handling it.

No one worried about Ze , Zs , loop impedance , disconection times , RCDs, the only MCB boards seemed to be the Crabtree C50s . No earth wires in condiut , the tube or trunking itself was the earth .
