You are entitled to your opinion. I can fully understand your point about the commercialism. It starts in August with tins of Roses chocs appearing by the palletload in supermarket, then by October its full on. Pressure from kids for expensive presents you can't afford. Clever advertising all around us, price fixing so even though you think its a good deal you are still being ripped off. But it has to be more than just buying stuff.

As others have said, even if you are not a believer, just be nice for a few days. Carry out some random acts of kindness. Enjoy some quality time with family and friends. Bury the hatchet and forgive people who may have wronged you in the past. I'm pretty sure that it has good health benefits (I won't mention the spiritual benefits as you make your position clear)

Just my opinions but sincerely wish you all the very best this Christmas

James
Whilst I see what Rev is getting at I can not help but jump in to ask why should you be nice for a few days when you could make a supreme effort to be nice for a full year ??? ;)

Random acts of kindness do not go down too well on this forum so if you do then best keep it to yourself as I have been shot down when suggesting it on here. But Rev is right....try it...it really does make you feel good and you never know what will arrive on your door mat in a Christmas Card.

Bury the hatchet is an act which should be done within a short space of time not just for Christmas. It is a known fact that we are dead a lot longer than we are alive holding a grudge or not speaking is a non productive exercise but again Rev is correct try a hug it fits far better than a blow. !!!! :(

I am also a devout Atheist but do you know what.......there are just so many really nice Atheists around who believe in doing the right thing and gaining respect for doing it.

If you really do want to escape Christmas I can thoroughly recommend Turkey. We did it and boy we had a ball with not one bit of Christmas music to be heard and no decorations to be seen Turkey.

I thank you for joining in this thread thereby proving not everyone enjoys this time of year but you have also told us what makes your Christmas a happy one which is in keeping with the thread. Thanks. :Y

I understand you feelings Evans but in this life we get one shot at it so the trick is to make the most of it.

If you fall you get back up brush down, smile and get on with life.

Nobody expects people to forget that would be so wrong but have a little thought then a smile is in my books doing the right thing.

It would be nice to hear about how you enjoy your Christmas but you have you feelings which are deeply respected.

I've got several tree decorations my grandfather used, plus the one he bought for me when I was born. They come out every year and cause me to reflect on past Christmasses.

My kids less than gentle handling have reduced the number left but they will carry on that memory in their own homes.

My dad worked 6 days a week all year, I used to think that was strange until I had children and realised why.

Keep all those old xmas relics alive!

Also... I would not normally have taken this on as I have loads of work anyway, however, them having had 2 sparks in already I wanted to find the fault as I thought it would be a challenge, wrong! Also I thought I would like them to have faith in sparks again!
problem is, too many 'sparky's' dont know how to fault find. been to many myself where someone else has already been and spent hours trying to find the fault and still not found it. some of them are hard to find and take hours, but most of them are found within an hour or 2. best one was an N-E fault on downstairs sockets. other sparky spent something like 6 hours trying to find it before giving up. took me 15 minutes to find which cable it was, then another 30 mins to repair.

This Christmas will be our first grandaughters first Christmas [6 months old]....so it will be a really happy one

This morning (Sunday 19 Dec) I saw Cliff Richard on TV. He was talking about Christmas and the spirit of same.

During the show Gloria Hunniford was telling her story about the loss of her daughter and how she did not know how to react to Christmas.

For those who have not read the opening post on this thread this subject was near and dear to my heart.

Not because I am a Christian because I am in fact totally the opposite but more because of the answer she was given by Cliff.

The message came over loud and clear -

Christmas is all about family and love for each other. It is about fun and joy and giving.

This is in fact how I see it and when I think of my daughter my heart fills with love which I see as a special gift to be cherished not something to be sad about.

Things happen in this world which we have no control over once it has happened it can not be reversed so there is no point in dwelling on it and allowing it to spoil your life.

This thread has proven to me that there are so many people out there who love their family. Their posts in this thread have filled me with beautiful family thoughts bringing a smile to my face and warmth to my heart.

To all who have taken the time to both read this thread and make a post in it, I thank you for your effort.

You make Christmas worthwhile.
