Hi All

I will be having to install a new circuit soon, the cable will be going to a hob on one wall the cooker is on the other wall. The cooker (according to instructions) will be able to plug into the ring. The board is an old wylex rewireable, so to comply I will install an RCD on that circuit. The lady now wants an extra couple of sockets, so these would also need to be on an RCD. That would mean installing another RCD into that circuit. Is there another or better way to do this? I welcome all replies

Probably not if new wiring is embedded.

By the time you have messed about with two Add on RCDs you might as well go for a New Consumer Unit

There are some good deals around on duel RCD Boards including MCBs.

 
what about a bit of 6mm from old fuse into rcd unit and take your ring from there, that way the whole ring has protection.

i would try to talk them into a cu change though

give them the options and prices and let then decide

 
They are on about having a new unit fitted but that will be when they can afford it (kitchen & fitting very expensive), probably in about another year.

Paul B, I'm not sure what you mean. I would be taking a feed from c/u from begining of each of the circuits (ring 2.5mm & hob 6mm) to two RCDs, then onto the circuits.

 
thinking about it, depending on cost ofcouse, could you split the tails and put a small board in next to the existing one?

are you installing a new hop circuit then?

or stand alone rcd in front of old board

 
I don't know if I could split the tails. I can't check either as I haven't got access to it till the install

Yes a new radial is going in to feed the hob. Like I said I would have just put that through an RCD to comply. But with her wanting some sockets installed now, I will have to put in two RCD's to cover it all.

 
This is a tricky one rewirable fuse boards will not take any RCD's so I would go with splitting the tails and make up a small 4 way cu take the new circuit from this, and then remove the socket circuit from the old fuse board and put it in with the RCD unit you have just made.

I would check the main bonding to gas and water as well it will probably be 15th edition or earlier if its there at all.

Dont forget the bonds might need upgrading.

Been able to check this one out today

She has already got a henley block installed, this is feeding a c/u for heaters, the main c/u and a small switch for the original cooker which is not used anymore, this will be taken out.

So I think the way to go would be to, put new tails into this henley to feed a 2 way board ( I have got a spare board, only trouble is the main switch is the RCD, I installed it for a new shower circuit, a few weeeks later it was removed because the councill changed the whole board, so she sold it back to me cheap), or would it be best to put in a new block to feed the original board & the new two way board.

I would probably have to change the RCD for a main switch and put RCBO's in to comply.

 
The main switch being a RCD in this case is permissable and would be no more of an inconveniance than that of a 6 or 8 circuits on a split rcd board.
