Title says it all really.

I'm confused by the various quals... is it necessary to hold C&G 2391 to do domestic inspection and testing, or not? Blushing

Cheers. ;)

Hello Jay - Welcome to the forum.

What qualifications do you currently have, if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks for your speedy reply. :)

I got C&G 2377, Certificate of Competence for the Inspections & Testing of Electrical Equipment (PAT testing) and C&G 16th Edition in October 2007, but never did anything with them (for various reasons).

I've just been made redundant and I'm considering dipping my toe in electrical work again.

Also, would I need to be Part P compliant to do just domestic inspection and testing?

Cheers. ;)

Hello Jay..

welcome to the forumGuiness DrinkGuiness Drink

Quick and short answer..

There is NO specific list of quals to be competent to do I&T.

e.g.

Guidance note 3 page 14, par 1.2 (required competence)

and 7671 chapter 61, page 156 onwards... regs; 610.5, 621.5, 631.4

these all only refer to a person being "competent".

as a general rule C&G 2391, would be a good starting point. ;)

Longer bit...

However some local authorities, housing associations, landlords, mortgage landers etc.. may specify that an electrical contractor is a member of one of the approved contractor schemes.

In which case the scheme provider will have their entry level requirements.

The fundamental point is that the guidance and information given in regs, on-site guide & guidance note 3 should be followed and information recorded as per the model forms illustrated in appendix 6 of Regs 7671.

TBH it is no wonder you are confused.....

it IS confusing without an agreed legally enforceable national standard? :(

it would help if electrics were a bit more enforced say in as manner similar to car MOT's?

but there you go!

Part P has no relevance or relation to periodic inspection & testing.

it only relates to "New" work within one of the Part P locations..

gardens

bathrooms

kitchens

new circuits

new Cu

central heating controls

Under floor heating

(cuddly toy, set of golf clubs, cut glass wine decanter, family set of suit cases)

oops sorryBlushing:coat

just went off into generation game mode!!!

(Deke will remember that as well:^O:^O:x)

so the Part P I&T only requires the new work done to be tested & certified for compliance with 7671 & building regs;)

Thanks... that's really helpful.

Surely I'd need to at least update to 17th Edition though? I mean, your average Joe off the street can't just start testing and inspecting... can they?

Cheers.

legally in a domestic property?.... erm..... YES:( :(

it is whether the person requesting the work will accept your experience and/or qualification..

could be considered a bit similar to where you choose to take you car to for service work...

a] an approved franchised dealer...

b] or Joe the mechanic who's a friend of your mate with his own little garage & MOT service.

at a later date if an unforeseen warranty or insurance claim arises..

the option b] may not be quite so welcomed or recognised... :(

although he may have done a very nice job at a reasonable price! :| :)

whereas an approved contractor, (member of one of the schemes) would carry's a bit more weight and recognition with higher authorities than the homeowner;) :D

And with his bad back not a good idea anyway he should just stick to fitting the kitchens.

Welcome to the forum Jay.

Just like to add that if you do consider to do some Inspection & Testing, you really need to make sure that you are fully covered by insurance to protect yourself and the customer.

The approved schemes request that you have to have Professional Indemnity Insurances as an addition to your other insurances for carrying out I&T

All added costs :(

but you dont have to be with a scam provider to issue PIR's. all other points are still valid though
