I sent an e-mail to JTL over the weekend, asking them to update my details so that they could be passed onto potential employers.

I received an e-mail back this morning, stating "Unfortunately due to our government funding issues we are only taking on

16-18 year olds for this academic year."

When did it change from being 16-25 year olds? More importantly, are our government that hard-up that they can't afford to properly fund apprenticeships anymore? I'm fuming.

How old are you? Have you done any further education courses?
Will be 21 come September, and currently on my 2330 L3. The way I read their e-mail, it wasn't open to anyone over 18, regardless of qualifications.

You are generally only entitled to one funded further and one funded higher education course. They can be made up in different ways. Wondered if that came into it?

That was my original thought, but then plenty of people do A-Levels and move onto an apprenticeship, and considering A-levels are a level 3 subject, most people study 3 or more, why would I become ineligible with just the one level 3 subject?

Have e-mailed them back asking why. Can't understand it to be honest.

I did my A-Levels before my apprenticeship, didn't seem to have much of problem with JTL. A lad working for the firm I used to work for started his JTL apprenticeship at 24, again after A-Levels.

Good luck anyway. J

JTL only fund it up to 19, or i thought it was 19. You can still get on a JTL apprenticeship at 23 or 24, it just has to be part funded by your employer. However if your 16-18 they fund the whole thing.

Thanks GS. When was this?

That wouldn't mean I'm flat-out turned down though. The quotation in my OP was taken straight from the e-mail I received, which mentined nothing other than 16-18 year olds. I saw an apprenticeship as another way to get into the industry. Obviously not anymore.

When I did my old type apprenticeship you where lucky to get one after you where 17.

Just received a reply -

"We are unable to take on anyone over the age 18 at present, and funding for the future has not yet been decided due to the current economical climate." Sounds like a massive kick in the teeth for those over 18 who haven't got any relevant qualifications.

As for already having level 3 -

"As you also have a level 3 qualification we will be unable to help you further as level 3 is the highest qualification you can get with JTL."

Septic - I realise I'd be lucky to find anything at my age, but I've known of a couple of people who have found one at 21-22, and as GS said, even 24 year olds can find them.

Marc.

Marc..

This was in 2005. Just been talking to a lad who has been looking for an apprenticeship for the last couple of years (hes 19) an hes having the same problem. Seems a bit unfair.

Thanks. Must be one last thing that Labour are doing to kick everyone while they're down. I thought these people were all for skilled individuals, or have they seen that 'skilled' people from across Europe are cheaper and so aren't bothering training Britons up anymore? X(
