This one might be for Patch but any help would be great. I am looking to change some lighting in a Stable 2 Horses, at present it has a pendant light hanging between the two but after I rewire it I was going to put 2 (1 each end) Trac Pro SON Asymmetric lamps in @ 70w each.

I have been told that SON light is harmfull to the eyes of the horse so does anybody have any ideas which would be the best ip rated lights to use.

Thanks

Chas

Apache is your man for this one. I would advise against any pendant or any lamp that is not protected from shattering, horses are very playfull and will try to chew a hot lamp.

They also produce a lot of moisture...

I've used IP bulkheads, non corrosive fittings and IP rated metal hailide fittings in the past..

just remember that anything in a stable should be out of the way of the horse

Thanks for this I plan to put the lights up in to the eves well out of the way and the switch out side so it can't be cheewed by the horse.

I was told the exact opposite, r.e. SON - The info I got was that the arc from the HQ-I (metal halide) can cause damage, and the horses preferred Sodium light; so I just fitted a pair in a stable block........

`Pache - is this likely to cause injury to the horses, mate????

Thank you all for your replies, I will just hang fire and hope Patch gives me his take on this one.

Like they said above horse chew everything !! Make sure light and switches are out of the way .... And make sure if you put the switch on the out side Of the stables its not near any where they will tie the horse up

Well a horse's eye isn't that different to any other mammal. They do have very good night vision and their eyes are quite slow accommodating to sudden changes in lighting levels. I can't find anything credible that any kind of light is specifically harmful to their eyes, if that was the case I think it would be more widely known.

I'd vote for a light that started dim and got brighter (CFL or sodium lamp) as the kindest option for their eyes.

Lots of sensible points re keeping everything out of the reach of the horse, including switches. Also the obvious RCD protection. Horses with metal shoes are probably the most susceptible creature to electric shocks.

I see mostly grotty pendant lights in stables followed by fluorescent tubes. Not that that is any real help.

Sorry for delay in replying.

Yes thanks. Few days in Cumbria. Decent weather mostly. Lots of walking with the gf and the dog. Nice and relaxing :D
