Hey guys,

this might seem like a bit of a stupid question, but I am trying to wire a plug for an appliance, but I am rather confused about the colours of the wires. Instead of the normal yellow/green, blue and brown, all three wires are different shades of brown... The appliance is not that old, so I have ruled out that they have just discoloured naturally. Can anybody give me some advice (perhaps a different way of identifying the wires)?

Without test equipment it would be hard to ID all the conductors, unless you can gain access to the appliance terminals.

What does worry me is that the cable will almost certainly not be BSEC tested, and would not comply with flex cables used in the UK or for that matter in the EU. What is the appliance? is it from outside the EU?

1/ remove the incorrectly coloured flex...

2/ bin it

3/ fit correctly coloured flex

4/ job done!

ALL modern appliances must have plugs fitted (typically molded nowadays)_

certainly not sold with open bare wires!!

What happed to the OLD plug?

:C

a pic of said cable may even be of some assistance?

but as with manator, may/most likely not be of an approved standard and possibly unsafe,

we have had very recent cases of severely undersized cables giving rise to fires and such like.

To be hones it seems like a LOT of a stupid question, forgive me if i'm wron but it seems like a troll post.

You know what the colurs shoud be and you know what you have, has one shade of brown chanked to anothe shade of brown at the other end, or has it now chanked to pink?

To the mods, sorry if this is out of order, but just read the op again

Sorry about the spelling

Remember this forum is for all even Veterinarians (with some superior knowledge of electrical installations), many people will post questions that find us through search engines, and do, as indeed I would, ask a question to those who would be better placed to answer than the bloke down the pub. Not everyone is an electrician, some are just a confused home owner faced with a problem they hope we can help with.

OK but what pee's people on here is that when you give someone a price to do a job they say they can get Fred from the pub to do it for half the price.

Philbas , what the hell does "Chanked " mean .? :D

It looks like keyboard error, should be changed, but when you have had a skinful all keys look the same and with blurred vision looks ok

We all make mistakes, if you call getting drunk a mistake, which is why I did not interfere with your post, it is good now and again to be reminded that some people who ask questions are not electricians, and sometimes those who answer are not sober :)
