I can't make my mind up about this - would appreciate your views.

I've got a re-wire to plan with customer in residence. I don't do many....too much messing, normally, but this is a friend of a friend.

My question, simply, is this:

Those of you who do re-wires, do you remove all the old cabling or do you leave some in the fabric of the building.

The reason I ask is that a lot of this rewire is going to be routed a completely different way than it was originally - so I'm thinking 'twice the mess' if all the old cable was to be removed as well.

Is there any reason why it can't be left as it is, in plastered walls or under certain floorboards that aren't being taken up?

Obviously, the easily accessible stuff will be ripped out.

Thanks in advance.

Leave it in unless you can get to it easy. Have fun moving furniture, relaying carpets and getting dust on everything etc.

Anything that is accessable get it ripped out, I would not remove anything that is plastered into the wall as the mess is not appreciated when people are living in the house. I have just done some upgrades to some lighting in a club, the last sparks left all the old cables in, I cut them all out and had enough to pay some wages for the day.

Thanks for that chaps,

So it's get what I can out, (for the cash), but minimise the mess:)

I didn't think there was anything wrong with leaving bits in place - just wanted to make sure.

Thanks again.

I just think it makes things messy and very difficult to ID circuits if a cable is left in place. I did a PIR on Monday and was about to give some code 2's when I realised that the cables were disconnected but just left in situe. I must admit it is one of my pet hates, but, if the cable is in the wall or is difficult to get at I would fully understand why it was left in place, I would do the same.

Just done a rewire at a house with people living there and you have to plan it well but i was fortunate in respect that the ceilings were all being re boarded so there was a lot of redundant cables (Old omperial stuff) that I removed before I run the new cable in . Testing it all was a nightmare as you seem to be constantly moving furniture and kids toys about to get access to accessories but got there in the end.
