following on from our Yorkshire is not English debate,

I got an idea from another forum I use,

obviously its not an electrical forum, there are no other ones,

its an international forum,

but we have Welsh,Scots, Irish, Cumbrians, Cornish,(even Yorkshiremen) etc on here so it might be interesting,

what is your 1st Language/mother tongue,

and what others do you speak/know and how well.

I'll start off,

1st language Ullans

fluent English

schoolboy French, a little spanish and less German, and can stagger a go at reading Russian.

oh,

Dim Cymru. :D

Sadly enough, only fluent in English, can understand a little spoken (slowly) Cymraeg, even less, but a little spoken German.

Can read very slowly more Cymraeg & German than I can understand & speak.

Hated languages at school, and was no good at them.

I was forced to study, Spanish, Italian, French & Latin as well as Welsh & English!

Dumped them all as soon as I could!!!

Then I found that my English weren't good nough to get me by!

Lived in wales for most of my life but not a native (I'm brummie by birth!) Picked up a lot of Cymraeg over the years - worked for MANWEB for 5 years and everything was conducted in Welsh so if you didnt make an effort you were kept in the dark.

Did German at school

I know a little Greek too, He sells kebabs down the road...

I've lived in Wales all my life however like Sidewinder I can speak very little, but understand slightly more spoken (by others)!

At school it was (still is) mandatory to be taught Welsh until you are 13 (end of year 9) and I hated every minuite of it... Now I wouldn't mind learning it, but I don't have the time:(

I bet you wish you had paid more attention in class eh Noz? I did a course a few years ago and became a lot more confident with the language. I would strike up a conversation with my Welsh colleagues and they would reply in ENGLISH - doh!

I was born & brought up in Yorkshire for the first 21 years of my life; so English is my prime language.

I can follow (to a point) a conversation in Welsh.

As with Kerching; I can hold a stilted conversation in Arabic; but can`t read or write it.

Some French, and about the same amount of Swahili.

Never got on with languages at school though..

Fluent in Sheffieldish due to being born there.

Moved to Lincoln 25 years ago, I now sound posh to the people back in Sheffield.

Never very good at languages, I got 1% in French at school, because I got my name correct!!

Born in cumbria fluent in english/west cumbrian

aint too bad with geordie, glasweigan, cockney, did french and german at school aswell but lucky if i can do more than order a pint in either
