I think the customers are to blame ( and the scam providers for not making the general public aware it is just about making money for them) as when they get gas work done they know to get a gas safe contractor in to do the work etc..

Firstly dont panic and keep looking at the time there is plenty of it.
Secondly just test to the best of your abilitys and make sure you do all the tests safely
When you changed the pads did you let the excess fluid escape to waste or did you force it back down the pipe?

In future it is a really bad idea to manually press in a contractor if the motor was busted you could end up with nasty burns. Unless you tested the dead side first that is.
