Hi thanks for your reply I plan to reinstate the original ceiling rose to test, on there the two lives went into the loop terminal, neutral as expected and switch live was in the live terminal. Would the two lives that were in the loop have made a difference? I have them in a wago currently...

Good Evening  Thanks for your reply. That was my first thought but that was switched on still. It may just be coincidence that it worked before and now with the new light it doesn't. All the cables were used in the ceiling rose that was originally there.
