    Re: Bathroom pull cords

Hmmm yes, but the same rule should apply in kitchens then? Anyway, not wishing to be a reg head but 701.512.3 effectively bans switches, it's just a silly reg I don't agree with and have never done :| (It doesn't appear to be a problem in other countries) edit: added a bit

    Re: Bathroom pull cords

I've never really understood how someone can get a belt off of a non conducting plastic switch. If you cover the lugs up with the plastic insert thingys most switches have provided now I don't see the problem. "reasonable provision" is how the saying goes... O)

Ouch - belt off a neutral!

Let's get this right. With every circuit switched off you can still get 65 volts across N - E? Pray

Ouch - belt off a neutral!

Do you get any V on N - E if the Imm circuit is switched off at the mcb?

    Ring main question?

All that extra insulation in timber framed new builds pretty much means 4mm for the rings now. With 25mm back boxes mounted almost flush it's a bit tight, so use deeper boxes is my tip.

    plasterboard fixings for lcd tv

I cut a square/oblong bit of 12mm mdf and fix that onto the wall, making sure I hit a stud with some of the screws, then fix the bracket onto that. You can also cut a hole in the middle of the mdf/plasterboard behind and then cover up with a blank plate, just junior hacksaw a few slots in the...

    What should I do?

There's not much you can do to combat the 'it works so it must be alright' brigade. 'I don't want you to do anything, I just want the certificate' are the close cousins. Just say that you don't think it's safe, but that you don't have the knowledge or testiing equipment to be able to help any...

    Back box in dry wall

I'll also confirm the corrugated cardboard is called a paramount wall. I use stout fence wire to push though it if wiring new. The OP's wall sounds like what we call 'plasterboard sandwich'. The correct term is 'laminated partition'. Basically a frame of batten is made around the ceiling, wall...

Hi ext 15, Yes, i do back up most stuff, got an external seagate thingyameebob, but what has really annoyed me is the i pod / i tunes set up... seems that if i'm not careful my i pod will dump all the tunes in favour of the new libraries zero tunes in it collection? What good is that? An i pod...

    bathroom circuits

I know that i'm being an argumentative ol sort, but i have a great deal of problem with this aspect of the regs. For a start, the wiring for the bathroom lights IS NOT IN THE BATHROOM and is therefore no more dangerous than the light in the next door bedroom. Secondly a down light is also NOT...

    Dimmer Problem

I'll agree with the others, you appear to be trying to dim the downlights AFTER the voltage has been stepped down to 12V, which is a no no :_| How about changing the lamps to 35W or even 20W to get that 'already dimmed' looked :D

    Consumer Unit Change

Can't say i would install anything trunking / conduit wise. My only Q is what size is main fuse? I can't tell whether you are proposing to swop the 16mm tails for 25mm ones. You might find that the main fuse is 60A so no need to swop tails IMO.

    Light switch move.

Well, I wasn't sure if the cable was actually being altered Batty, I thought maybe just moved over a bit 40 - 50 mm? (cable not extended as it's long enough) The rest of you, I hear you, can't argue against doing it 'properly' to the regs and all that, just think that I'd be tempted to simply...
