New electrician needs help with recessed lighting please

Hi all, I normally work in domestic properties and am very comfortable doing this. Last week I got a call which took me out of my comfort zone. The work is in a small modular lab at a hospital near me. Basically, there are 2 sets of 3 recessed 600x600 ceiling lights with flourescent bulbs...

    PFC Question

How would you deal with it? Would you just note the high PFC and state no action taken due to meter tolerance levels on the certificate? ---------- Post Auto-Merged at 22:11 ---------- Previous post was made at 22:08 ---------- If I'm reading GN3 rightly (pg 54), where the service cut-out...

    PFC Question

Fair point well made. I was thinking about parallel return paths but there aren't any of course. Silly me.

    PFC Question

Hi and thanks. It only does a 3-wire test but the method for PEFC which gave 2.7KA is red to incoming line on main switch, black to neutral busbar, green to earth bar. For PSSC it's red to incoming line again, black to neutral busbar and green to neutral busbar. I'm using crocodile clips to...

    PFC Question

I think it's an issue of meter accuracy as I believe most 17th Edition test meters are only accurate to within 0.05 ohms or so. An increase of just 0.01 ohms for Ze would mean PFC reducing to 11.5KA.I don't know any other electricians locally to be honest so I think I will call the DNO and ask...

    PFC Question

Maybe I'm measuring it wrong but I don't think so. The instrument is a Dilog 9083P, three probe test meter. for PSSC I clip neutral probe to neutral and earth probes to neutral busbar. Line probe goes on incoming line connection to main switch. Press button and measure PSSC. Then I repeat...

    PFC Question

Hi all. I've just completed my first re-wire and everything is fine with the testing with one exception. When I measured Ze I got a value of 0.01 ohms. The distributor changed the supply over to PME and the means of earthing is TN-C-S. The problem is a value of Ze of 0.01 ohms equates to a...

Cheap to run electrical heating systems?

Hmm. I suspect the reason is most new bathroom fittings etc are now high pressure and the tendency in the plumbing world is to 'rip-out' low pressure systems where possible and replace them with high-pressure ones.

Cheap to run electrical heating systems?

The best system on the market (in my opinion) at the moment are the Thermaflow electric combi-boilers. You get wet central heating with them too. Basically they are a storage heater with 4 immersion heaters. You use it on an Economy 10 tariff and it heats the water in the cylinder up (which...

Am I too old for an Apprenticeship ... 21 yr Old Glasgow

When I ran my business down South I was getting to the stage where I was looking to take an apprentice on. Unfortunately I went through 5 trying to find one that was decent and who had a good attitude and could pick things up quite quickly. From a financial perspective you are at a...

    NICIEC Assessments, Advice Needed Please

Hi all. Just a quick update. I fitted the board and completed testing today. All testing made sense today (I tested the whole house just for experience really). I even picked up a loose neutral wire behind one of the sockets when I did the R1 + Rn tests. Quick question. How much testing of...

    Borrowed Neutral? Advice Needed Please!l

Quick update. Put both radial circuits onto the same MCB today and the problem is gone. Well, the borrowed neutral is still there but at least it's safe and working now. I guess I'll just note it on the electricial installation certificate. Thanks to all for the advice.

    British General CU

I fitted my first consumer unit today and it was a BG one. Nothing to compare it to but its was a 12-way dual RCD board. Very easy to fit and plenty of room for the wiring. It was a bit difficult finding space in the bottom to run an SWA cable in and terminate it correctly though. Look nice...

    Borrowed Neutral? Advice Needed Please!l

Hi and thanks. I am happy with what the problem is to be honest, I'm going back on Monday to check the issue out but I am sure it is a borrowed neutral. Starting to think it is a bad job to show the assessor though to be fair! If I can't easily fix the wiring issue I will just end up putting...

    Borrowed Neutral? Advice Needed Please!l

Hi. Definitely no cross-linked live in the downstairs switch. I will check the landing switch on Monday. It wouldn't surprise me if it's been wired off another circuit to be honest. Their house has several lights just wired off the ring mains too. All a bit of a mess but seems safe enough...

    Borrowed Neutral? Advice Needed Please!l

Hi all. I've put a few posts up about my first job, changing a consumer unit for my dad. When I took out the old unit I noticed that 2 of the 3 lighting circuits in his house were wired into the same MCB. At first I thought it was a ring mains to be honest until I noticed a 6 amp mcb there...
