Evening - And A Little Help Please

Bookmarked this page to come back to when I need to! Some great stuff in there I have been running a business for the last 15 years which I can keep going and know all about book-keeping - so there are skills I'll be able to transfer over. And I'll be able to keep the old business going as I...

That's a lot of kebabs.. Interesting read - thanks. Sounds like you have worked really hard at it and built up a great business.

I appreciate that - I just feel like I have walked into the Stretford End wearing a Liverpool shirt..

Don't become a Spark - it's **** and the streets aren't paved with gold. That seems to be the message I'm getting.

This is like those adverts that they showed in Eastern Europe that tried to put people off coming to Britain.

Can I just clarify that you are saying that nobody should retrain as an Electrician, and there is no way that you can possibly make a living out of it? Good to know...

Oh dear - my posts are quite embarrassing to re-read. In my defence I do not think that electricians earn a fortune. I was a photographic technician in my last job, and that industry has completely changed so I need to re-train. As it is unlikely there will be an alternative to electricity in...

Any advice on getting some on-job experience? I don't smell, and am a Liverpool supporter so good company.. Further down the line, of course. I would be useless now..

Couldn't find one with them - Edgware is fine for me as it's only 20 minutes down the road..

No! Pretty sure I can get out of the loan agreement with ATL so have been looking around and discovered a local course in Edgware - looking at doing the C&G 2365 level 2 and going from there.  I found the thread on the other forum and had a good read - I think I have just demonstrated...

Hi - will find out! It was the previous owner that had wired the house.  I asked them about that - different firm apparently. All of this I found out AFTER enrolling...

Ironically I spoke to a neighbour last night whose house had been re-wired, but not earthed properly. The guy who'd done it had completed a level 2 course only..

    Barnet, to be exact!

Thanks Doc, duly noted. Apologies again for being a hot-head.  I read about the poor woman in the Midlands who died, and would certainly not want to be responsible for something similar happening.  I will look into switching to a local college - my fee is paid monthly for ATL so I am not too...

Fair points - sorry if I came on a bit strong. I have been a victim of dodgy building work in the past so should understand.  The ATL course I am on is actually 3 years, but a lot of that is waiting for new material to be sent, and waiting for the practical weeks

Would you say the local college courses offer people like me (in their 40s) a better route int the industry then? They often only last a year rather than 4 years.

Evening - And A Little Help Please

That's the problem with forums - you ask a question and you get the answer depending on someone else's prejudices/grievances - whether it's relevant or not. I'm guessing you have stats to back up your theories - how many accidents have been caused by people that have completed these courses...

Evening - And A Little Help Please

I think I've stumbled into something else here - just wanted to find out if anyone had been on the ATL course. Not really interested in arguing the pros and cons of these courses! Blame the course providers or the regulation bodies - don't blame the people that sign up to them!

Thanks for the advice... I'm assuming I will not be leaving any house 'live' if I get proper training though.

They told me Luton had one. They do, but only for plumbing! My wife heard it so I have a witness.
