    My Favourite Phonecalls

If the LABC come in and I&T the work, the sub contractor they use will only issue a PIR, which the LABC are happy to accept. But there is nothing to say that they would be happy to accept a PIR from another 3rd party (from experience, if it is not their subbie, then they will insist on a...

    Extraneous conductive parts

if unsure can't you test the resistance - using an ir test between the soil pipe and an earth. If its around 20k (can't remember the exact and can't be arsed to calc it) or less then bond it. O.

    Extraneous conductive parts

i think you are getting confused by main and sup bonding. They are say the soil pipe needs main bonding (just like a service) as it goes direct into the ground. Where as the rad needs sup bonding - to ensure its all at the same potential (the water system is already main bonded) O.

    RCD tripping problem

hi, Have you done a ramp test? Have you measured earth leakage? Identify which circuit it is (could be both) - check each appliance, or test by splitting the ring, etc. O.

    PAT test earth current

I do find it puzzling, that it is now acceptable to do a "soft test" instead of a 25A test. Therefore why even bother doing a 25A? O.

    Asbestos flash pads in fuseboxes.

i work at one site, where they've auditted for asbestos and found around 3500 occurences of it. Covering all three main types. Majority of the time it is fine, as long as it is not disturbed. But some areas are out of bonds until it is removed!

    RV conversion problems

is the gennie kicking out at 60hz, and the charger doesn't like your stepped down 50hz supply? (just a thought) O.

TPN / L.V central switch panel.

Were they wired into a BMS? 5V is normally used for control circuits from a PLC or controller. So basically each relay controls approx 10 rooms. When removed (or de-energised) allows the rooms to be heated? O.

    Volt drop and fusing

forget the sums and calcs. If a cable is capable of carrying 100a, the current load is lets say 40a, but taking into account volt drop - this allows a max load of just under 60amps for it to comply. My question is do you fit a 100a fuse (max rating of cable) or a 60a fuse (to limit the current...

    Volt drop and fusing

You mean Zs? (There is no requirement for just R1Rn) Assume that Zs is ok, then do you need to "fuse down" to comply with VD? O.

    Volt drop and fusing

All, If you have lets say a 16mm cable, which can hypothetically carry 100+ amps, but its length is 60m. To comply with volt drop, the cable is limited to 50A (hypothetically), do you fuse this cable to 50A or to 100A? ?:| O. ; \

    earth rods

all, Whats the preferred location - inside the property or outside (ignorng the issue of dpc/dpm) Does the rod and connection need insulating from a person touching it? What reg is this? O.

    Direct replacement

You're right... I've checked the dimensions...and give or take half a mill here and there they are swappable. Oh well I've ordered a fuse holder...it will go into stock :) O.

    Direct replacement

Hi there, I've done a quick search... you can not get a 60/63 OSD fuse. You have to convert the fuse holder from being an OSD to some other type - eg BAO. I've managed to order the fuse holder and fuse for 15 quid. Thanks for your help though :) O.

    Direct replacement

Hi all, I am after a 60A or 63A version of a Busmann OSD80 fuse. Does such a thing exist? I believe these are offset bolt BS88 gG fuses. Thanks, O.

    RCBO's on TT

i like getting people to think :) On tt systems there is a requirement for all live conductors to be disconnected under a fault conditions - domestic rcbos are single pole (normally) - whereas rcds are dp. So a high integ board would not comply for the circuits that hang direct off the...
