    VDE Tools

Your tool kit sounds very similar to mine. And as above if you are not working live or adjacent live working then Insulated tools not required, this was the case where I used to work anyway. Still remember in the early 80s putting insulation on our own tools as we never saw VDE kit, pyro...

Three Phase or Single Phase for instruments

If 3 phase is available then use it, the 3 phase motor is generally more efficient and more reliable than single phase motors. A 3 phase motor is just 3 sets (or multiples of) coils of wire, this creates the rotating magnetic field which a motor requires to rotate. A single phase motor due to...

    Fig 8 T&E

Mate asked if I could stop by at his daughters house that she has just bought as there was a cable sticking out of the wall with black tape on it, was passing so dropped in, first thing cable was live with just black tape on it. Fed from 32A socket MCB, thing that got me was the profile of the...

    is this 3 phase

The board on the right looks right a fairly typical “builders board” something the spark would make during a house build as a temporary supply for the guys to use before 2nd fix electrics are done.

Developing a Tool for Post-Soldering Insulation

Could you not just use a product like the Raychem CRSM repair heat shrink, we use to call it zipper heat shrink and used it for repairing the outer of a cable without disconnecting it.

    Invertek Macro Options.

Remembering a thread from a year or so ago where Dave was looking fo power a 3 phase lathe using a single to 3 phase inverter. I had at that time just used Invertek inverters for the first time, today I was using my 72” x 2” belt sander which I had fitted the inverter onto and it reminded me of...

    Solax inveter tripping MCB

Good discussion and following with interest, think a new thread would be a good idea as it would make it easier to find in future, but happy to keep looking in on this one if that is easier. Sad to hear about your situation Sidey but thank you for technical insight into these tech issues.

    8 cores to one mcb

I do suspect that because one 2.5mm was adrift from the mcb and that knocked out 1/2 the downstairs sockets that it is a radial and so should be on a 20A mcb .

    8 cores to one mcb

The thing is there was a couple of spare ways there but I don’t think they wanted to trace out and separate the circuits.

    8 cores to one mcb

Friend of a friend asked me as a favour to see why 1/2 his downstairs sockets weren’t working. Went to his place, took cover off consumer unit, very scruffy inside, found 8 cables into one mcb and unsurprisingly one of them was slack and was melting its insulation and decided it didn’t want to...

Cable size from the consumer unit to inventer. 10-15 meters distance

Probably best just running a bit of ducting just now with some thin blue rope in it, that way when your project spec is clear you can pull in the correct cable / cables as there might be comms stuff involved as well.

R1 R2 values fluctuate over time

I remember once I got wildly different results either side of a lunch break, left my meter on top of a panel went for lunch, retested when I came back from lunch and it took a minute or two to figure out that the panel I had laid my meter on was at about 35deg C, it totally threw my readings out...

    Garage power wiring

The person that is testing it should be involved at this stage as there is a few things to take into consideration for example, length of run, route of run, protection rating (MCB size), earthing arrangements, RCD protection required?, protection of lighting and power circuits in garage, cable...
