    heat for disabled son

Maybe more details would be good. How long are you expecting power failure for? Would you just need heat at night when he's in bed or are you looking to heat an entire room during the day? If it's just at night maybe look at a 12 volt electric blanket, you could use it direct on the battery or...

Wiring a star delta pump DOL

It's an interesting thought. It's something I've never seen done that way but in theory it could work with an LED although some may be more suitable than others due to forward volt drop requirements. I was shown this method durng my apprenticeship at which time it was much easier to lay your...

Wiring a star delta pump DOL

We just use a 12 volt battery across one winding whilst there's an analogue DC ammeter that can measure low miliamps connected to another. You adjust the zero point of the needle using the calibration screw on the front of the meter so the needle sits somewhere above the zero then tap the...

    1/10,000th

I also remember the days when if a motor had been standing for long periods we'd disconnect a phase and run it on 2 phases for a couple of minutes just to warm it up before IR testing. It's a bit different nowadays, insulation materials and winding techniques have improved even in standard...

    Grid spikes tripping MCB?

^^ The thought occured to me this would be possible in a commercial or industrial setup but the MOV's in most domestic appliances aren't likely to survive passing the kind of current that would be required to instantaneous trip an MCB. Still around, just busy in real life at the moment...

    Grid spikes tripping MCB?

You mean upstream? I've never seen a power quality issue cause an MCB to nuisance trip, only RCD's. Apart from a direct lightning strike I'm not sure what other power anomoly could cause a high enough current to trip it. Much more likely to be a wire or busbar on the wrong side of the screw...

25mm holes through 1m wide walls?

There are SDS drilling/sleeving systems available, not sure how good they are though...http://www.gripple.com/gb/en/p175/a152/thru-in-1-28-mm-sleeve

    Electric panel with ethernet ports

Not sure what the latching relay is for but it looks like a pretty standard distribution board possibly with a broadband over power interface

    How important is this ?

I run several different Linux distros on sme of my other PC's but I'm tied to Windows on others because of application compatability, AutoCAD being one of them. The other option is setting up VM's or dual boot but from experience it always gets messy and complicated so I'd rather avoid.

    How important is this ?

I think your problems may all stem from you being on XP which is no longer supported. I'm thinking the latest versions of Firefox may not install on XP so firefox is telling you you have the latest possible update even though there are later versions available for other operating systems like...

    How important is this ?

I also run XP and use either Opera, or Firefox. Both run fine for me. If you use older versions of browsers you're going to run into problems with some websites not to mention some of the plugins such as flash player might cause issues as well. Also browsers are regularly patched to close...

    What browser ?

About Opera Version information Version 12.17 Build 1863 Platform Win32 System Windows XP Browser identification Opera/9.80 (Windows NT 5.1) Presto/2.12.388 Version/12.17 I think the majority of browser hang-up's and crashes are brought about by add-on's like Flash.

    Rainwater Harvesting - pumps etc

^^ This would still require dry run protection in the bottom tank, level control in the top tank and separate motor overload protection.

    Rainwater Harvesting - pumps etc

Here's a link to the Grundfos pressure controller. I've used these before and can vouch for their reliability. There's a pdf data sheet there you can look at as well for further info.

    Rainwater Harvesting - pumps etc

I'd look at a pump with a pres control and a small reservoir tank to reduce cycling at the outside shed and install a good old fashioned ball float valve in the tank in the roof. The pres control will monitor phase angle to give you dry run protection as well as run current to give you overload...

    Rainwater Harvesting - pumps etc

A newly built lab would be a lab puppy then?? :) A small jet pump maybe 500-750watts they're often used as a well point pump and they self prime up to about 8 meters and can run for limited periods with no significant head pressure. Look at the Pentax CAM series. Is it potable water by the...
