Testing a TT System max ZS

Use the maximum for RCDs as they're being used for fault protection, so 30mA would be 1667 ohms. Table 41.5. Remember the MCB will protect against short circuit, line to neutral, and the RCD will protect against earth faults. Although not common practice I tend to do a Zn test to confirm the...

How to get 18th Edition as a foreign engineer?

The 18th edition exam shows that you know how to read and understand the UK electrical regulations, just shows you a keeping up to date with the requirements. And it does not make you an electrician.

    Zs measured value

3 wire no trip low current test can give high results but you can also get uplift through RCDs which doesn't help. There is an alternative test you can do which bypasses the RCD, just remember to remove the link before energising.

Daft, stupid, unbelievable or just plain wrong EICR codings

And how many posts on another forum such as I've changed my light and now it doesn't work/stays on/goes bang... 😂😂

Daft, stupid, unbelievable or just plain wrong EICR codings

But they could come across mixed wiring when swapping socket fronts etc that have had spurs added...

    Earth electrode testing

Carrying out a Ze test on an electrode is an acceptable method as listed in guidance note 3. There may be circumstances where you're unable to carry out an Ra test, such as street cabinets surrounded by tarmac and people wandering around.  Due to the amount of TT systems in my area, not many...

    16A Fused Connection Unit

You cannot get 16 amp fused connection units, maximum is 13 amp. The supplier may mean a 16 amp circuit fed directly from your consumer unit. This could potentially be either connected via a commando plug or hard wired. It is not advisable to run heavy loads from an existing ring final circuit...

Daft, stupid, unbelievable or just plain wrong EICR codings

I forgot to add, it didn't need one, was in all new colours. I can see the need in a domestic situation where the homeowner may not be aware but in commercial jobs they seem a bit pointless. Will one small sticker on a 2kA intake board that I don't have access to make a difference?

Daft, stupid, unbelievable or just plain wrong EICR codings

No harmonisation label - C1 This was a subcontractor who did the work when I told the project manager I would do the EICRs and he wondered why I kicked off. Glad I'm not working at that place anymore.

    Exporting PME

Think about the different earthing arrangements and what would happen if the supply neutral was cut.

    Exporting PME

How can you export a PME system? The earthing arrangement stops and the suppliers head. If you needed to supply an external building with services or components that require bonding then you could TT them to save on cable but this in itself has its own inherent problems.

    IR testing

Initial verification or existing installation such as a periodic inspection?

    My fuse box?

I wonder if the previous owner was an industrial electrician having access to a few 'bits'...

Lightbulb identification and how to change

As it's a rental property I would contact your landlord to get the fitting replaced/repaired. As others have said it might still be in warranty.

Anything to attach to a mosquito mesh which will indicate if it is live?

Can mosquitoes read? Normally a plastic sign saying something along the lines of "Risk of Electrocution, DO NOT TOUCH" tends to work. If not you could possibly add a warning light from the power source when it's turned on would illuminate.

    SWA sub main

Yes, I know, I should have been clearer... TBF I was still hungover...

    SWA sub main

Regardless of earthing arrangement the cables must be suitably protected, meter tails should be double insulated unless there's sufficient mechanical protection. SWA internal cores need mechanical protection, such as trunking or conduit, as the insulation is not suitably rated. Either gland...

    Testing final ring

Good point, I’d forgotten about RCD uplift.

    Testing final ring

If your dead tests are all good at the spur then I would suspect that the low test on the MFT can be a significant cause. This setting puts out a lower current to test the Ze so isn't as accurate, couple with that possible loose connections by the socket clamps then you can see unexpected...
