what kind of downlight is this?

Generally LED bulbs require 12 DC and should be supplied from an LED driver. You will most likely have a 12V AC transformer in the ceiling for each light fitting, LEDs may run on these but have a reduced life time. These LED bulbs run on 12V AC and should be a close match. Remember that in a...

How many heating elements can I get on a single phase?

A quick amps vs kW comparison If you are using the heaters for an 8 Hour period even though the heaters will be turning on and off by thermostats, then you will be limited during that time in what other items you can use, e.g. starting your electric shower, oven, hob, possibly even the...

add a cooer swithch/socket to an existing one

You are then into the realm of compliance with the wiring regulations, whereby sockets and cables buried in walls (in safe zones) <50mm deep require 30mA RCD protection.  That is more complex to ascertain from a distance and would have to be determined by an electrician on site. Electrically...

add a cooer swithch/socket to an existing one

You want to add another cooker control unit with a socket after the cooker outlet plate, but would it not be easier to wire in a single socket outlet to the cooker outlet plate along with the built in oven (assuming it does not also need a socket, in which case just connecting a double socket...

HI From total newbye : need some help with car electricity

The demand of the power banks is reasonably high but not beyond what a standard alternator could supply even with other standard car loads running.

    9kW shower wiring.

Welcome to the forum. The parallel arrangement has been covered by Andy. However it is not very likely that the size of the cable is the issue, if this were the case then the damage would occur at other points in the circuit as well.  It is more likely that the cable termination in the switch...

    A blood moon tonight:

Totally solid cloud where I am, I can't even make out where the moon should be. A standard astronomical observation in the UK!

    PV Solar Fire Prevention

Once the coating has dried, PVStop can be easily peeled off by hand. The coating does not contain any adhesives and does not damage solar panels in any way. The coating can be peeled off up to 12 months after being applied even when exposed to UV and other weather elements. (from PVstop). The...

    Downlights Tripped

Ok because i did not know you were doing R1R2 or what units you were giving results in I assumed it was still IR, however the results of the R1R2 show the low readings to be connected lights high ones not connected so still check light four connections, the fault sems to have cleared but check...

    Downlights Tripped

You only have three lights that worked so after that third light there is a disconnection.  Because of the disconnection all readings after that in the circuit are high because there is no complete circuit.  Presumably the four lights that show a low reading were the three that had been working...

    Certificate needed

Even worse for Electricians near the Irish border, totally different regs and requirements, even different cable types for Ireland and Northern Ireland. However it would be useful to have some correlated and consistent (and  clear) requirements to meet.

    NVQ Assesment

The question does appear unclear but I would possibly be thinking that the site is a special location in BS7671 and so the particular specifications required for that special location would be the answer.

    Downlights Tripped

At least you have now had good experience of why the dead testing must be completed before powering up, and you will remember this in the future and it will ensure that you test correctly.  In this case there is no major damage so a good lesson learnt.

    Stuart

I think there are various places on ebay that have reasonably priced digital certificates on CD that you can buy for a whole range of electrical requirements. "Professional" produced the pdf certificates for this forum I think but I was not a member here when they were issued at the last change...

    Courses/career path

Welcome to posting on the forum, good luck with the career progression (remember to get some savings behind you to get you through lean times). EAL and C&G are technically equivalent according to the Qualification Credit Framework  and EAL are becoming more recognised by industry but...

    Main Earth size

You are normally asked for the size of the earthing conductor, according to the definition this is from the means of earthing to the MET, i.e. the bit of scraggly wire from supply cable to a small bolt on the back board. However when documenting I, as all above, state the size of the cable from...

    VAT registration & dodgy customer???

There is no requirement to be a limited company to register with HMRC for VAT. You must register for VAT is your turnover is over £85,000, but you can register at any turnover if you wish. However this is entirely independent of registering your company with Companies House. Admittedly if...

    Government stupidity:

Tidal power is fairly OK but does not manage to produce a lot of power, there are also very few places where it can be effectively utilised. However tidal systems also have a major detrimental impact on marine life (barrages are worse than lagoons), especially in the best places for tidal power...
