    Insurance require board upgrade

I have a client (of a builder client) who has been told by his insurers that the assortment of consumer units he has should be upgraded to the latest standards, and that only their own electricians can do the job. It is a large house (single phase TNCS 100A) with various small dbs, none of...

Went yesterday to do a cooker swap. 6mm cable coming from outlet. Cooker switch above with integral socket outlet, with a washing machine plugged in. 9KW cooker, old and new same rating. 32A MCB. I had already upgraded the bonding at a previous visit. Seemed simple. Looked in Cooker switch and...

putting up scaffolding with cordless impact drivers

I saw some scaffolders putting up scaffolding with cordless impact drivers yesterday and I wasn't very impressed tbh. Traditional steel tubes and fittings. One guy was putting in a cross member using a magnetic level, he tightened the fitting with the driver, adjusted the pole, then "tightened"...

    Confusion in "best answer" threads

eg this thread in the q&a section the answers are voted by users using the arrows, but there is no sense to the thread. The order of posts can be different each time it is refreshed. Is there a way to have chronological as default with a filter for best answer?

Using electricty monitor for billing purposes

I have been asked to fit a secondary meter to a ground floor so that the managers of the building can bill the users on a daily basis. The ground floor is a café with different chefs every day. I haven't looked at the electrics yet but I gather that there is 1 phase, 1 meter and 1 CU. Will go...

    Standards Improving After Part P

Just had my niceic inspection visit. Really nice bloke who has been inspecting for yonks. He did say that standards have greatly improved since the advent of part P. Beforehand, time-served ACs were commonly making all sorts of mistakes. Now 90% of businesses are compliant. Comments? :)    :run

    Cable Jointing Question

Am I right in thinking that the jointing method used here https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/24033707/IMG_20151016_154221.jpg Does not connect the sheath across the joint? This is on the end of the cable https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/24033707/IMG_20151016_154734.jpg and it is TNS.

    Emergency Lighting Maintenance Query

I have been asked to look at some emergency lights, which are all not working, in a Church. I normally just do domestic stuff and am a bit out of my depth with emergency lighting. I have the feeling that the lights have not been maintained for some time, possibly since they were installed, else...

Haven't been here for a while, hello again. I have a re-assessment next week and phoned niceic up to confirm the date of my last re-assessment. This was in June 2012.
