I am in the process of buying a chandelier from usa.It is 110v and I need to know if it is possible to convert to uk voltage.

thanks in advance for any advice.

sorry forgot to mention this chandelier has a built in transformer and the lights are 20w halogen x12

If the lamp holders are standard ones, just replace with 230V lamps.

The wiring will be US colours, black for live, white for neutral, green for earth. (I'm sure someone will correct me if I have them the wrong way round, it's a long time since I was in the USA)

Satisfy yourself that the wiring insulation is good enough for 230V

As Mr Dave said....

I would want to be sure the insulation on the fitting is suitable for 230v....

Probably is...

but maybe not...

I would try and check with the manufactures data first...

Its a bit safer putting 110v through a bit of flex designed to carry 230v than the other way round.

Thanks for reply but forgot to mention this chandelier is fitted with an internal transformer and the the lights are 20w halogen x12.

Check the transformer, if electronic, it just might be suitable for 230V input.

Otherwise throw away the transformer that came with it and fit a different 230V in, 12V out transformer of suitable rating for the number and size of the bulbs.

Has the transformer got a tap/connection/winding for 230v? otherwise I think you will find that your fitting will be putting 25v+ down to your 12v lamps!

A bit like the little switch thing you get on the back of some electrical equipment (typically Hi-Fi gear) with 110v - 230v slider

OR

Can you remove the whole transformer assembly and fit a UK rated transformer?
