Hi,

I have a vintage metal wall light which has no earth cable. The cable in the wall I’d like to attach it to does have an earth, and is switched on and off via a fused switch below. As the light is metal, does it need to be earthed to be safe to connect?

:Welcome:

Is this "vintage" lamp a modern light fitting that just has a Retro vintage style...….

[ in which case it may be double insulated and not need an earth connection. ]

Or is it a proper real old fitting someone has taken down from and old property....

and refurbished or not as the case may be?

[ in which case it is probably NOT double insulated and may not have ever had an earth connection, even though it realistically does need one to be electrically safe! ]

Are there any stickers or labels on it saying it complies with current regs or has been tested as electrically safe?

is there any logical point to attach an earth connection?

e.g. a screw or lug directly onto the body of the fitting?

Guinness

P.S.

you have made the right decision double checking first.....

get it wrong and electrwikery will injure or kill people very quickly and easily!

:Salute

Thanks for your reply - it’s definitely a vintage light not vintage style - there’s nothing to suggest it’s double insulated or any other stickers etc. Is the best thing to do get it rewired with a 3-core cable? Or is there a way to double insulate it now?

 Thanks!

usually easier to re-wire with 3 core cable. Qute often there is an earth terminal at the lamp holder even if it isn't being used, failing that there is usually a screw that an earth can be terminated to.
