Hi, I,m doing the above assessment and would appreciate advise on what to look out for. I,m quite confident about the theoretical side (famous last words) but the tutor on the course did not expain very well what will be required for the practical. For instance, visual inspection on the 3-phase/single phase test board, will there be faults on this? Also what to record on the test schedule? also is it a periodic test? etc. Any advise or tips on the procedural side of things greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

Hi there

Did this back in october. Basically you will be doing a PIR on the big test rig although there are 3 other elements to the assessement.

As far as the 3 pphase goes yse its a 3 phase board so you will need to be confident about testing for supply across all 3 phases to earth, to neutral, to each other etc. Also dont forget your R1 + R2 tests on the motor starter do the tests for each phase and dont forget to do the teests on the outgoing socket too. All in all not too bad. If you have had a lot of experience you will breeze it.

Assessment 1, visual inspection, 30 mins to spot 12 departures from BS7671

Assessment 2, IR test, 20 minute to find two faults (one fault switched in at a time)

Assessment 3, two ZS readings in 10 minutes, identify if pass or fail & find max acceptable value from BS7671 corrected according to "rule of thumb"

Assessment 4, Full periodic test (inspection shouldn't be required, covered in Ass. 1 but check with assessor), 3 phase board with single phase sub-board, 2 hours, includes paperwork.

Not when I did it this was a totally seperate test board to the finding of the 12 faults which was on a different board.

That's right septiclecky, the C&G give centres specifications for assessment rigs, there are two versions for Assessment 1 (1A & 1B), 1 version for ass. 2, 1 for ass 3 and another for assessment 4 but the C&G documentation says during assessment 4 candidates are only supposed to remove covers needed to be removed for testing (ie not trunking lids) & the marking schedule concentrates on the testing, the ability to inspect having been assessed in assessment 1. As I suggested, check with the assessor what level of inspecting he expects.

Apologies if I accidently misled anybody.

if its anything like the board I had was about 30 or 40 faults,!

examiner was happy if you found any 15, not picky about being the 12 he had on his sheet.....

boards were a bit battered to say the least...
