If you want tips on Vista, don't! I haven't used it, and have not sold a single machine with it on, and I don;t support it.

XP though, there's a couple of copies on TPB. Just search for XP Home retail and grab the one that looks the best, I couldn;t tell you which one it was I used, think I grabbed all versions and did some trial and error before I got a full working set.

Would this be a good time to move this to PM's rather than in the public domain?
It's the key that is the legal bit, the discs aren't copyrighted or protected. As he's got the keys I can't see a problem.

That's OK then. Just if it's all legal and above board why don't Microsoft make them available for download?

They are, if you have a Technet subscription. ;) You can buy them from MS as well.

thanks guys, it says IDE beside it, deffo the same size plug(just tried a dry fit),

and Im gonna set as CS,

only other Q is, do I need to format before fitting, or can I do format after?

using something like G-parted, or will it be OK .?

Im not sure of filesystem, could be either NTFS or EXT, I really dont know.

I have been toying with the idea of putting windoze on it for a dual boot (Ipod etc) but dont really know how to do it.
Steptoe either select Master or Slave, CS means Cable Select or in other words you need a modified IDE cable, which is a cable where a strip has been split and reversed (I think it was 6 or so but can't recall), this method was only used by some vendors such as Compaq

Under Windoze you can use Control Panel > Performance & M.... > Admin.... Tools > Computer Management > Disk Mana..... to resize and format etc

apache, I have all the Keys required, just that as this PC was given to me the original disc werent, as the previous owner,(my niece) had upgraded to vista, hence me having the XP licence still on side of the box, and the vista disc & licence on my desk.

does kinda make you wonder why its not available freely tho.

maybe something to do with cloning etc.

Maybe something to do with MS not wanting to lose any revenue. Not sceptical.
just had a look on a new PC website,

and if you want a copy of the disc of the software/OS that they have already installed on your brand spanking new computer it will cost you in the region of

Depends on where you shop. In most cases the Windows OS is subsidised by MS so the PC is cheaper to manufacture than building one without an OS. Generally if the company offer an OS free alternative it will be non subsidised and more expensive, to some extent. There are exceptions obviously, dpends who built the PC and who put the OS on etc...

What winds me up is the amount of different versions of the same software there are. I have an OEM disc, but I can;t use it with many keys. I have many keys that I can;t get to work as yet with OEM\retail or others. I've just reinstalled XP on my sisters laptop, it has a Vista key but I have 2 broken laptops that have a Windows key on that doesn;t work with the newe install from an OEM disc. It's just a big con\PITA.

i fail to see all the issues people have with vista, i ran it for years with no issues what so ever, infact it made our old desktop amazingly reliable when it was constantly crashing with XP(despite having a fresh install of XP to see if that was the issue).

what i find really funny though is people like yourself lurch, you've never run, installed, bought or even used vista yet hate it and tell everyone you can not use it as its the devil. i personally have vista on 2 laptops(third was on vista but upgraded to 7 as it was newer and more shiney), have had 2 desktops on vista(one is now also on 7 for same reason as laptop) and my brother has 2 laptops on vista and they were all perfect on it with no issues at all! the only time i have ever had issues is when using 64bit and that was on all operating systems and simply due to lack of drivers or 64bit versons of flash etc.

When I say I have never used it, what I mean I have never used it day to day. I have had to deal with it on a few family machines etc... and I have had problems with all of them. Fair enough some people have had no troubles, or not had anything that they would term as trouble, but it is a long way off flawless, and so is XP, and every Windows OS. It's just that Vista was the furthest off being flawless. For what I need an OS to do, Vista was bottom of the list, and working in IT with other people who have also stuck with XP rather than move to XP I could see no reason to use it. If MS wouldn;t have released Windows 7 I was looking to move away from Windows if Vista was the new way of doing it.

To summarise, for browsing the internet and using Office etc... at home then Vista will mostly work. For what I, and many other power users and above wanted, Vista wasn;t suitable and XP was to a reasonable extent.

I run both 64 bit ubuntu and 32bit, and have never had any issues with drivers etc,

occasionally flash gives a glitch on certain websites, but thats it.

have you thought about upgrading your windows7 to Ubuntu.? ROTFWL

I had vista on my laptop and after a while it ran so sllooowwww, even on a clean install it took about 4 mins to boot up!!

About 6 months ago I decided to try Ubuntu as a dual boot! and it was great - very fast (at everything) until one day it updated and I then had problems connecting to my router by wi-fi... it was forever dropping out!

So back to the present... I'm now running XP on every machine in the house and it's perfect for what I want

That is currently my major gripe with Ubuntu, every time I do an update something doesn;t work quite the same as it did, but then something else will also work better than it did!

what versions did you try?

I know 9.10 has a few issues with some stuff, you have to add the restricted drivers repositories.

wifi is lots lots better in 9.10 than previous installs/versions.

its really down to hardware manufacturers making their software/chipsets available for the developers,

as, unlike microsoft, ubuntu is free so the developers will not pay the manufacturers for the information,

as apple and windows do not work the same software, neither will open source software.

wifi is plug and play through most edimax cards/usb sticks.

try a new download and run it off a live CD to check for compatibility, bit slow, but no install required.

NOZ

about 6 months ago was jaunty 9.04, try the new karmic, it really is a lot lot better, and much more point and click too, it was only released in october 09, hence the name, 9.10, year 9 month 10.
