Will 4mm flex be ok within consumer unit and then under floor boards to feed an induction hob? (properly clipped direct obviously)

Red book gave a 4mm cable due to the amp draw on the hob so I proceeded to my supplier and asked for 10m of 4mm cable at the electrical counter. He went away cut the cable and came back with 10m of 4mm flex when I queried this he said he had cut it now and that it should be fine. I am just wanting to get confirmation on this as the CU will be getting inspected.

I will just add that the 4mm flex will go from the Consumer unit to the 45dp cooker switch, then the flex provided by the hob will be wired in the other side of the cooker switch and up into the hob. Sorry if I had not made this clear.

Flexible cable can be used as fixed wiring....  521.9

as for will 4.0mm be alright for an induction hob??

bit of pot luck without knowing any power ratings???

Don't forget there is a capacity difference between sold core cables and flexible cables..

also what is this red book....

surely we should be on Green by now?

more info needed I think..

I would have told the guy behind the counter that I'm the one with the money, so go and get what I want, not what you think I want.

You wouldn't have Screwfix trying to force you to buy the wrong thing, so what makes a proper wholesaler thing they are holier than thou?

Perhaps another reason I rarely set foot in a wholesaler these days?

But only if the relevant provisions of the Regulations are met

Well I certainly would not use flex for a cooker circuit how much was it a metre. Last bit of 4mm butyl I brought was around £5 a metre. As the others have said why should you buy something you don't want. If you went into a pub and asked for a pint and they gave you a babycham would you drink it probably not.

Getting of subject I fitted an induction hob this week and that was on a 13 amp plug. They must be making them more energy efficient. When they first came out they used more power than a normal hob.

4mm pyro, far more current carrying capacity and will be a proper job.....
best if he doesnt ask for that. he will probably be given a box of matches and told 'that will do'

red book is out dated.... by a few years

anyway, flex usually has a lower rating than T&E, so while 4mm T&E may be suitable, 4mm flex may not be

and you should have told the wholesaler that you didnt ask for flex, he either gets you what you asked for, or you will get it elsewhere

I fitted an el cheapo Electra Elecheib induction hob. Rating is 7.3kW and the manual actually stated to wire using 2.5mm sq HO5 cable. Maybe they were applying diversity to figure that cable? Nom 32A then full load of 7.3kW. Supply to the ccu was in 6mm sq.

As far as I understand if these induction hobs "see" a pan they'll be heating it. I fitted  H07BN4-F, 3-core, 4mm butyl flex from the ccu to the hob and tbh wiring that in to the hob terminations was tight. All good though, no "haircut" necessary! Would have been no chance whatsoever with 6mm sq.

Some of the better hobs come with pre wired cables that you take to the ccu. But you can see why so many of these end up on plug tops!
