Ask a stupid question, get stupid answers........ i'm prepared for that.  At least i'll have the answer to my question.

Armored cable - 3 stand - completely understand that, but the hell do you use 5 way armored cable for ???

Thanks

for got to mention other than for 3 phase supplies.

Use it for whatever you want to use it for as long as it is 7671 compliant

Sub to a board in the garage and a pair of st rappers to run a two way

Anally retentive earthing to a garden socket

Door intercom

........depends a lot on what size it is really

The other day I was running. AWA 400mm singles to an 11kV substation for a server room......so the reverse thinking begs the question

A). Why use AWA not SWA

B). Why singles

........orses Fo corsis

As said ,  could be 3ph+N+E ,could be for controls .  SWAs come with  many cores from 2 upwards.

And again , may I re-iterate that posters shouldn't feel the need to apologise for their questions in their Opening Posts on this Forum .

Its just later, if and when you prove to be a total Richard Head that slight animosity may surface in the replies.

Notice I didn't mention that its 5CORE   not 5 WAYS :innocent

Using the extras for the two way light switch gets my vote for those winter nights when my missus looks out the window and says "You've left the garage lights on!". Saying that I've got a decent length of 7-core, 2.5mm SWA, 90 deg stuff that I got years ago.....................3 x 5mm. sq maybe?

Well I acquired a good length of 5 core 2.5mm flex, so I made myself a nice low volt drop extension lead with 2 cores in parallel for L and N.

Unconventional, and terminating two 2.5mm into a 13A plug was a work of art. No doubt someone will tell me I can't have a CPC of half the CSA of the live cores.

Well 4mm has a 1.5 CPC so go for it..........nobody on this side of the border is bothered!

I've often wondered why the CPC is always less than the live size

I will have a bash at Kerching's question..

Errrmmm, Aluminium armour because as it is a single core cable and not a multi if you had steel armour you could have problems with eddy currents induced in the armour. [circulating currrents, weird heating effects and losses??]

2, why singles?? Cos multicore 400m2 would be huge?? Dunno, what was the voltage, might be something to do with that.

Am i warm?? or miles out??

john.

They will not allow the armour to be used as a suitable earth conductor, If an existing cable is fitted that is not 5 core you have to run a separate earth of the same size cpc as the cores in order to comply. This is of course for three phase distribution. Pointless running five core for any single phase!!
