I did some reading on WW2 and the war at sea over the weekend.
Churchill, in his books, states that the Scharnhorst arrived in port
at Kiel after the engagement with the Glorious, a 1930's Cruiser
which had been converted to aircraft carrier duties.
The commander, not Lutjens, was promptly summoned to a reprimand
for expending so much ammunition in sinking a vessel which posed a
minimal threat to the German Navy.
The sinking of the Glorious was subject to a 30 year secrecy ruling.
I often think about that, and the man that I would have known as my
uncle who might never have lost his life, and the wrath of my Father
who castigated the stupidity of the Naval Command who brought it
about.
