This the earthing arrangement to an upstairs flat - first time I've seen something like this.

The earthing appears to be provided by a solid rod (appox 15mm) screwed to the wall which then enters the service head. (is this possiby coming from the downstairs flat?) - I presume this is classified as TN-S?

How common is this and is it ok?

Also the earthing conductor is connected to this via a BS951 clamp - given the solid nature of this rod is this clamp acceptable?

Many thanks

I think thats a Pyro M8 (Micc cable) (Mineral Insulated) which must be the main feed , the copper sheath will be the earth .

That black thing on the cable is the older, original earth clamp .

Thats about the only way you will connect the earth so it has to do.

I guess that the supply (MICC) will be TN-S, Cable size possibly 2core x 10mm which in MI is equal to 16mm , I would guess.

I can do, but don't have the tools any more :( too expensive to but a set at the moment as I don't have any Pyro jobs, though IF one came off I'd get the tools straight away and get on with it!

Kerching,

Post away mate, it will be an eye opener for some and would go a way to helping some others, me included as mine were supplied for me!

Ok. will root them out tomorrow

Anybody remember 'F' size? or AlCuMICC? or the stripping tool that you fitted the 'gland' to? or 'stub seals'....or the BICC Heatshrink ones.......................beejayzus I feel old now FFS... :coat

AlCuMICC no!

The rest maybe depending on the local names down here!

I'm now getting old, following another thread officially I think, I may be lucky to still be alive!

And yes I have Pyro tools ( including the wierdo Mole wrench jobby). Those pots didn't last to long did they?

Also the patented , home made , universal, fits all stripping tool . I'd also post a pic but it never damn well works for me , even with the help of Admin and Apache.

Anyone remember the crappy way they sized Pyro before metrication ............... something like 285/.0045

That going back a bit too far for me, Sandra.

Yes, I can & have made pyro off, a number of times. No, I don`t have the kit to do it now though........Dying art, by all accounts?

+8...

have done pyro in the dim distant past..

and used one of them weirdo shaped mole'ys..

But I have not touched.. (excluding ripping a bit out).. Any MI for many.. many years..

:| :C

Not done any for at least ten years until a few months back.............had to break into the sounder leg of a fire alarm to include an additional siren , extended the wiring in FP but existing Pyro had to be cut and two terms made off.

Seemed to do loads of Pyro years ago including a B,ham University job all done in 1 core Pyro , wired throughout as earth/neutral concentric with earth tail pots , basically TNC or PME through the whole job I suppose. Metal dist.bds with earth and neutral bar combined in one and bolted to the casing.

A socket would have the centre core as live ......then the earth tail , (which mustn't be cut), went to the back of the box---- into the neutral and looped to the earth .

I was a mere apprenti then but remember that Home Office permission had to be granted to allow wiring like that.

The reason for it was it was a huge job and concentric wiring was a massive reduction in costs.
