I have just re-wired my garage for the pUrpose of a Scam inspection, on the CU in the house the swa feeding the garage is protected with a RCD, I have also fitted a RCD CU in the garage, Got me thinking, does it realy need to be rcd protected in the garage as the cable feeding the garage is rcd protected????

And dont even mention exported earths:D as i asked the inspector who is coming out to see me and he said it was a myth so that will do for me

cheers Applaud Smiley

you can change RCD at garage for isolator if you want

Why do you have a RCD feeding SWA anyway? if you can, i would get rid of the RCD at house, and have RCD at garage. less walking when you plug something in that you should have...

its a 17th board in the house so all is rcd protected.

i would re-arrange the board to put it on no RCD. unless you have a DP switch between CU and SWA. if there is a fault outside, it can take out half the house

but thats providing its a TN supply, and isnt fed by T&E buried in wall to external wall then into SWA etc

Just looking at it now, first proper time as just moved in, its wired in 2.5 t+e which is run internally then through the wall and into the meter box which is outside were it meets a through box were the swa is terminated into, and then off to the garage, its a pme system.

So will have to stay rcd protected as t+e is run internally.

I think i will just change the rcd unit in the garage to non rcd.

Can you see any problems in this?

Maybe leave the RCD in garage if its already installed. unless you want the RCD for something else. If there is a fault, the garage RCD may trip before the house (but 99% of the time they will both trip anyway)

They both trip but can live with that, i can swap the internals as i have a replacment somwere in the van anyway.

I do have another garage i can use, same set up realy apart from the house cu is split load.

easier to use my own though saves driving him round

The house cu could be swapped around and make the swa non protected and then leave the rcd in the garage, but then the t+e that feeds the swa would not be rcd protected.

I could do that but would he pull me up on it as the t+e aint protected in the house, i could say it was originally done like that, only thinking thios cause like you say a fault outside is going to take half the house out , even if a bloody bulb goes...

Would i be responsible to make sure that all is protected??
