After my dog has ruined my lawn by pooping, peeing and digging everywhere, I was thinking about re-turfing it.

a. My question is can I lay new turf straight onto old? or

b. Do I spread a bit of top soil over the old turf then add the new turf? or

c. Have I got to dig the whole lot up and start a fresh?

d. Get rid of the dog? :D

I'm hoping its not 'c' I can't be bothered with digging it all up.

Any help much appreciated.

Tim

In the correct order:

D and C

If your dog is a Labrador - I will take him off of your hands.

c) is probably your best option. If it's a large area you might want to consider hiring a rotivator.

I was afraid you might of said c.

What about if I put a fair bit of top soil on the exsisting turn ( Say 2") and then lay the new turf?

BTW Admin its a german shepherd.

eh no you must remove the old turf otherwise the new roots will not bind to the subsoil, and numerous other issues

So... turn over the soil with a fork, add to this a sand/compost/top soil mix and fork it in, rake as flat as you can, then walk toe to toe over and over until as level and compact as you can get it (additionally if you have access to a large roller e.g one you fill with water after treading down)

lay the new turf later in the day if dry and sunny, and use tread/scaffold boards to firm it down and to spread you weight as you lay it, get the sods as close as you can no gaps use a kitchen knife to trim around borders, finally lightly sprinkle early morning and late evening for about two weeks, try not to flood the lawn as it will not settle through at first

I had the same problem, my dogs just tore the lawn to peices.

I fixed this by laying some big concrete slabs over.

Not as green as the grass but better looking than a scraggy lawn.

I personally would not turf this time of year as its a bit dry, although I would not turf at all as I am to tight and our dog will only ruin it again.

I was just about to go with your ideas Bob.

But I think I'm moving over to Battys line of thinking.

We too are going to get rid of our grass and concrete it over, but in preparation for when we get our dog.
