I have a problem with Mrs PD's classic ipod.

Does anyone here know how to fix them, or recommend a forum that specialises in them?

Push and hold the on off button at the top and the round button together then slide across the slider when told to do so this will shut it down then turn it back on this might sort the problem out.

I think it is hold the home button and the on/off until you get the apple sign then left go of all buttons.

It will turn off then turn it back on, hey presto Roberts you fathers uncle :slap

Right the problem is this.

sometimes it will just lock up, like a PC that has crashed. It can do this with menu's left on the screen but completely unresponsive.

It's done this about 3 times so far. First time I took the back off, unplugged the battery, plugged it back in and it was fine. The other times I just waited a few days for the battery to go flat, recharged it and it was fine.

This time it won't start. You get an apple sign then it shows a picture of a poorly ipod and says wwww.apple.com/support/ipod If you listen close to it, it sounds like the hard disk is starting up then stopping repeatedly. so I guess this time the HDD has failed?

EDIT:

Just taken the back off, unplugged the battery again, and lo and behold it's working fine.

I just hate things like this with no real on off switch and no means to re boot them when they crash.

I tried all the multiple key presses listed on the apple site, and none worked, but a propper cold re boot does.

sounds like it's time to engineer a proper on / off switch for it.

It's not a good idea to take the back off, as I'm sure it will void the warranty, why not book it in at the genius bar and let them sort it out for you ? I've had a couple of my(many many) apple products replaced free of charge (recon units) , just do a full back up and make sure its running on the current software before you go, you can't fix everything with a screwdriver, unfortunately:( ps genius bar is free and u can book it in online here

Well I've reset the ipod and downloaded all her music again. We will see how long it goes before it crashes again.

I can't see it's a corrupted file. they are all tracks ripped from cd's by itunes, no dodgy unknown downloaded stuff.

Now, another question about itunes (which I do NOT find to be an intuitive bit of software)

She had "sync" turned off.

In order to download all her tunes in one go, I turned "sync" on, and great it downloaded all her music.

I then went to turn "sync" off again as that's the way she likes it, she only wants to download new stuff to the ipod when she wants to.

As soon as I tried to turn "sync" off, up pops a box saying "do you want to turn off sync, and delete all the music from the ipod"

I chose cancel.

HOW do you turn sync off, WITHOUT deleting the tunes that are already on the ipod? : headbang

Just an update.

After resetting the ipod and re loading all her music back to it, it's been sat there for the last 6 days playing every tune on the ipod in turn, quietly all to it's self. All 697 songs, 6.8 GB, nearly 6 days of continuous music.

And it performed faultlessly. So hopefully it's sorted now.

Thanks for you help.

I spoke too soon.

Mrs PD is away this weekend, so she sets off in her car with the ipod playing.

She phoned me this morning to say it died again on the journey.

So it looks like back off, unplug battery again.

When she gets back I need to have a look at the car ipod stand / fm transmitter. I'm now thinking rough unregulated power supply from the car is upsetting the ipod (last time it crashed was in the car as well) Though I would have thought the battery in the ipod would have smoothed that out.

I can feel the oscilloscope coming out to check the stability and noise levels on the power feed into the ipod, and some extra regulation and filtering possibly.
