Our PC is upstairs in the office, it is plugged into a phone socket with a filter .

I'm just using the laptop downstairs which connects to the BT Hub by wireless.

I clicked on the icon for signal strength ( don't know why) and there appears to be reference to the strength of other PCs , two being the names of neighbours each side, someone with Linksys and someone with Sky and one BTFON whatever that is .

Am I connecting through next door's wireless connections or what ? My one neighbour supposed to have a secured business connection .

No your connecting through your own. You can see their connections because they are within range of your wifi chip. If you clicked on their wifi addresses it would prompt you to enter a password to connect, of which only they know.

Strangely enough I found my wifi ran out at the bottom of my garden and struggled until a fwend suggested I look for 'other' wifis which upon searching i found there were @ a dozen, 4 of which have no security, happy days, I know I shouldn't but I'm a bit of Bugga sometimes

few years ago in Oz, i took my laptop with me. one of the neighbours had wifi with no security, so made full use of the free internet for the few weeks i was there. afterwards, my sister still used it for another 6 month until she moved elsewhere (and then had to sort out her own internet)

And BTFON is the free openzone for people who are allowed to connect, so one of the those hubs near you is a BT Home Hub or Business Hub where some of the bandwith is set aside for every tom dick and harry to use.

If yours shows a padlock then it is security coded.

For bt fon, if you have bt broadband then you can register for free and then you are able to use bt fon or openzone. I even get it on me iPhone as well, so it's not restricted to laptop or Pc.

True dat :Salute

only get fon and open zone if you allow them to use your hub in the network  if you opt out you dont get it free

I have found 100% of the time in various locations this and Btwifi is sooooooo sloooooow I use the 3g signal instead. Has anyone used the Btfon

I've used it outside peoples houses, and it's better than nothing and much faster than 3G.

If in customers house normally ask if I can jump on theirs or take a peep on the bottom of the router and try the password  :innocent
