Anyone On Here Good With Electric Gates?

Ive been lumbered with the job of replacing the controls and motors for some electric gates. Having never even delt with this sort of thing before im in at the deep end.

The new controls are totally different to present ones but i need to use the existing wiring.

Anyone done this sort of thing?

May not be possible - depends on the wiring spec. of the old kit, and that of the new gates.

I have wired them up before but generally the person that installs the gates tend to set them up. I personally try to avoid them.

was there a post on here recently from a chap at a gate and controll company that started a thread about online training videos to go on there company web site and mabey running training days.

he sounded a helpful chap and could supply the parts needed

The general wiring of the motors looks ok. Its the communication cabling that is slightly confusing. 

For those that do know their stuff ive gotta change a BFT Altair P control panel and motors to a NICE HOPP HO7124 Swing Gate opener.

All the bits have been supplied by the customer, im just fitting it.

Do you feel OK with fitting the new equipment ?

Get rid of existing and start again .

Stuff must come with wiring instructions .

So if it doesnt' match the existing wiring , its start again.

I believe new gate installs have certain safety  rules attached which , if you are not happy with , you might need to walk . 

One thing is , I believe , a double gate should close , one after the other , and  there must be a measure to prevent people ,specially children , from being crushed between them .   Some of the motor driven hydraulic drives are very powerful .

I would suggest , install new wiring , to manufacturer's instructions, then get them to commission the job.   

Edit :   Don't be afraid to phone the suppliers.

there is an ongoing case in Gtr Manchester ATM where the gate manufacturer is trying to push blame onto the installer,

if in doubt walk away.

Wise words. As said above rather walk away if you have no experience. It will be along and expensive learning curve probably involving many visits and no profit.

This was me and I've asked our technical guy to look at the issue and come back with an answer. 

There are lots of people in this industry who install safe gate systems every day but if you get it wrong you are liable as already mentioned. The guy in the Manchester case is being charged with unlawful killing of a young girl.

I wanted to find out how we can best make sense of all the legislation for real world use and I thought this industry would be a good place to start.

Just to put the thread to bed.

I finally managed to get over and have a go with these gates today.

Spent an hour trying to decipher the wiring of the existing control panel, as in the ip box it was like a rats nest. Ripped the old equipment out, left all the wring and cracked on.

The new openers were dead simple to install, they used a system called blue-bus to connect all the photocells. Just 2 wires with all the photocells wired in parallel. The unit self learnt all the devices connected. Opening  sequences were easy to programme.

The hardest thing was getting a good fixing on the brick piers for the brackets.
