for best practice which core is used for neutral in 3c SWA or 6243y

I usualy use the grey as N but my son got told off at college today as the tutor said it should be the black.

is there any weblinks to clarify this officialy

thanks

carl

wouldnt say it matters what colour you use for whatever purpose as lomg as identified in some way.

But personaly makes more sense for black neutral and grey marked earth.

There is reg for it, But I was told that it is frowned upon to use the Black, sleeved blue for neutral or to be used as Neutral in 3-phase, because they don't want the new colours to be assossiated with the old.

I now use grey sleeved blue for Neutral and Black Sleeved Green/Yellow for Earth.

Told off by his lecturer eh? Pfft.

Ask him where the reg is? ]:)

As long as the same conductors are terminated the same and sleeved the same each end, then there's no problem.

used to do this but saw the other way as recommended method in some handbook or something, so changed.

grey sleeved blue from day one cant find a reg for it but now considerd

good practice ask your scheme provider

now lets have a vote

There is a very long previous thread on this paddy will probably find it. I personally use black as neutral sleeved blue but it is not in regs so as long as you sleeve cable at both ends it doesn't matter as far as I am concearned what colour you use.

Batty

i dont know of any law that states what colour the cores must be, you could use pink & purple cable if you wanted, providing they are marked blue & brown at the ends.

Most people (inc me) use black as the neutral, but some say you should avoid using black as neutral to try and stop using black as neutral for all new colours

just make sure its sleeved and your sorted

PADDY, WHERE'S THE LINK??????????

anytime I come across a BLACK sleeved as a NEUTRAL I issue a danger notice and disconnect the offending circuit.

one of the worst cases of bad practice IMHO, we are NOT DIY bobs!!!!!!!!

seems some people are just stuck in this rut I'll do it my way and sod everyone else.

we are supposed to be harmonising colours with the rest of the world, not just cos bill/bob/john or dennis told me it was ok to use whatever colour I want, you will be wanting to use red for CPC next at this rate.

Don't tell steptoe that.

show me what part of 7671 says you must not use black as neutral.

would you issue a danger notice if a black was not sleeved red at a light switch (or a blue not sleeved brown)?

I think the powers that be want us to break the link with the black neutral so , stupid as it seems , in SWA the grey becomes blue and the black must become Green/yell as it will usually be an earth.

In 6243Y it may be a timed fan so Brown=brown , Grey= Blue,(neut), black=brown.

It could also be used as ,say, two strappers and a switch wire so I guess they all become brown.

Perhaps they should make SWA with all brown cores then we could buzz them out and colour them Red-Yellow- Blue and Black for the neutral :^O :D :| ;) ; ) ;)

I was always taught to use black as earth to get away from the old colour convention of using black as neutral.

I don't suppose it matters much so long as the wire is correctly sleeved.
