hands up everybody that used yellow for neutral in the old colours.

I'll do it the simple way for you all again in case some of the late boys missed it first time round, here goes.

old colours

L1 = red

L2 = yellow

L3 = blue

new colours

L1 = brown

L2 = black

L3 = grey

harmonised

red = L1 = brown

yellow = L2 = black

blue = L3 = grey

and you still dont think it is bad practice and dangerous to start messing about with and mixing up L2 & L3 just because the guy down the pub does it that way?

providing its adequately marked, i dont see any problems with sleeving the black as blue. And like you say, 7671 is not law. doesnt even get to bad practice, never mind danger notices.

andyc,

do you do any 3phase work?

then you would realise the importance of just not deciding on using any colour for whatever purpose you feel like.

would you care to tell everyone if you used L2 for neutral in the old colours?

yes, i do 3 phase work.

in old colours, i normally used blue for neutral, but i may have used yellow or even red. but like i said, providing its adequately marked, then any could be used.

Ideally, we should still be using RYB, but lets not get into that

I think the powers that be want us to break the link with the black neutral so , stupid as it seems , in SWA the grey becomes blue and the black must become Green/yell as it will usually be an earth. In 6243Y it may be a timed fan so Brown=brown , Grey= Blue,(neut), black=brown.

It could also be used as ,say, two strappers and a switch wire so I guess they all become brown.

Perhaps they should make SWA with all brown cores then we could buzz them out and colour them Red-Yellow- Blue and Black for the neutral :^O :D :| ;) ; ) ;)
I don't get this break link bit in early versions of the wiring regs the earth conductor was black so how does that work.

Batty

its back to the fact of a pointless claim of most people using black for neutral,

a few guys down the pub does not constitute most people.

try starting on a worldwide basis, we are now using harmonised colours,

like it or not guys we need to start harmonising our work practices too, thats why I put a poll up, to see who even harmonises with themself.

I give the ring final about 10years max, even now its getting hard to justify it with derating factors etc.

What do you prdict in it's place, Steps?
As above. :)

all radials, admin, like all other progressive countries have been using for a few years now.

more efficient, less nusiance tripping, easier fault finding, better loading, generally better benefits all round.

I dont know how the poll works yet, no one has took the plunge yet, be interesting to see how many vote honestly tho.

its mostly personal preference for what colour people use as neutral.

As for the ring part - i have partially stopped installing them. easier to wire almost like a ring, but have 2x B16 or B20 radials

easier to fault find as well

Sorry Mr Steptoe, Sir - I meant do you predict that they will be continued in 2.5mm or 4mm?

I dont know how the poll works yet, no one has took the plunge yet, be interesting to see how many vote honestly tho.

When I last looked, 4 had voted.
Regards.

Funnily enough I have just rewired a house in radials in preference to ring circuits for the sockets.

Back to cable colours, like I said I always sleeve the black as earth, and yes its since the old colours went out, just so black could not be associated with neutral.

However providing the cable is marked at each end there is no problem with either.

Most retro work I do following other electricians they have sleeved the black as earth as well.
