Seasons greeting people.

Mother in law has had bg out to fix her boiler several times over the last few months.

Each time they tell her the bonding is wrong and should be put right, it's bonded aprox 200mm after entering the property. They say it should be closer to their box. I've told her it's fine and not worry, but she's clearly worried about it.

I'll be replacing it to shut them up and calm her down, but what a way to treat a 67 year old woman on her own. Grrr

Oops wrong section, sorry.

Then let a plumber do it. The gas regs aren't 'our' regs...
That's exactly my view,

It was a boiler guy asked me about it once why we never bond outside,

I showed him the reg and he couldn't believe it that we have two different regs for the same thing,

He is happy if it's bonded anywhere,  I normally leave a note at the meter if it's external.

Yes Kerch, that's my point.

The outside is only 3-4 m away. I know our regs say ok, but she still frets because the engineer says it needs doing. Doesn't matter what I say to reassure her.

Barx, there is no plumber just a guy repairing a boiler, who will charge a small fortune to do it. So, I'll be replacing it to stop her worrying.

Makes you wonder how many people just get them to "sort it out". I should have asked her to get a quote.

I get a lot of work thanks to BG if they see anything other than 2x 10mm to gas and water they try freak the customer out and fleece them for cash.

There is also the socket n see test which a guy doing a powerflush for a customer went round with his socket n see and found a socket with no earth and told them they needed a rewire it was just a loose connection! : headbang

depends on the tester. some will show as an earth at very high readings, others will be slightly dim, some will say no earth, some will give an indication of the actual loop value

up here, there are many TT's, even in the middle of a large built up area

Guy who serviced mine a month ago reckoned mine was ok at 2 ohms.

I was seeing to the baby and didn't see any test gear appear, Odd though as I'm a TT with 50 ohms last time I checked.

He clamped up when my wife blurted out "it should be my husbands an electrician"

Can't see gas or water bond either but not mentioned.

I've got picture somewhere of my Metrel easytest showing >3.3kohm on one socket of a double outlet and the other outlet with a socket tester plugged in showing ok.

Nothing wrong with the double socket either. Conduit Earth with no continuity to the socket. I'll try to find it after little legs goes to bed.

I have had the same argument with a local plumber around my way.

He said 300mm of gas meter and said he could condemn everything. I quoted him back the 600mm and reg no's. He still tried to argue it even though i showed him the actual reg, he beleived his word was better then BS7671.

Has anyone seen an actual gas regulation regarding bonding?

From memory its only TNCS that has to be that size........

Boiler fitters that call themselves Engineers in my experience are a load of over priced jumped up rip off merchants who bull5417 all day. long
