Hello, i've enrolled at college to do the level 2 year 1 in 2330. However im not sure where it can take me? I'm looking for employment to try and change to the nvq apprenticeship. I just have a few reservations or questions if anybody has any answers.

1. Which jobs can i go for with this course? i know installations, but electrical maintenance in factories etc...

2. Is the work on the rise?

3. Expected salaries for apprentice, newly qualified, or maintenance electrician?

4. Work environment? im a computing graduate with no interest in being at an office and wanted something more handy, but have no practical experience at 23, will i struggle?

5. qualifications to become an electrical designer, or other areas i could progress to (in the future when experienced).

and just any overall comments, pros and cons of the industry?

Thanks

Hello and welcome.

Not a good time at the moment. Maybe things will be picking up when you have finished your college course?

:D

As you're an apprentice you could apply for a variety of fields. As you yourself said, the 2330 is broadly aimed at installations and domestic at that really. I suppose it depends on what you yourself what to go in for. Personally I'd just concentrate on getting into the trade and picking up experience either in domestic properties or industrial work for now. Don't run before you can walk and all that.

2. Is the work on the rise?

Depends where you live and if you are willing/able to travel. Up round Humberside area things are pretty dismal at the moment for mates/apprentices but it seems to go through peaks and troughs though nothing ever seems to be overly busy unfortunately. I do see plenty of work in the London/Kent/Oxford areas. My advice? Get your Yellow Pages out and go through each and every one of those companies listed and phone them, e-mail them, personally hand in your CV to them to see if there is any available work. Be prepared for plenty of knockbacks but don't give up. Its sounds like a cliche I know but you really do have to keep plugging away.

3. Expected salaries for apprentice, newly qualified, or maintenance electrician?

Sorry, no idea. Would just be pure speculation on my behalf. I'm a third year apprentice/improver/mate and I earn
