hi all i have this motor from a miele washing machine and wanted to use it for polishing some bits i have but im not sure how to wire it ive included photos for anybody to see i only want it to run one speed and reconise it needs capacitors it has 6 wires which 3 go to the rear and the remaining 3 go to the front (brushes and winding

I was under the impression these machines used microprocessors which could vary the voltage & speed. I wouldn't have a clue how to connect that, if its even possible without the loom and controls. my biggest concern is how are you going to house it to make it safe from yourself and all the stray polish etc ?

believe it or not secureing the unit has been made very easy as the body has 4 threaded holes allowin to be bolted down to a base of your choice as far as the stray polish goes im not to fussed about being covered!! this motor is over 20 years old i was hopeing it would have not have micros and such like

so annoying when theirs only six wires

without going in to too much detail all your worrys have been taken in to account the stray polish will full on to a gaurd and attaching the mops is by way of a threaded shank espeically drilled to connect to the motor shaft

if i could only get the motor to run the whole thing would have cost me

Miele - Contact Us May be the best place to find out how it is wired? Or as Steptoe suggests bench polishers | eBay Buy the correct tool for the job.

I'm going to stick my neck out here and offer a suggestion.

Normally the rotor and stator are wired in series. Which 2 wires from the rotor determines the speed, and which way round determines the direction.

So do you have any test equipment? e.g a multimeter?

If so find out which pair of stator wires gives the highest resistance, and try those first, connected in series with the rotor.

Advice given on the understanding it's not guaranteed to work, and if you blow yourself up trying, it's not my fault.

I still concur with the advice from others, this is not the best motor to be trying, but you insist you want to try it, and will probably do so with or without guidance.

From this type of old washing machine it was probably just relays used to determine which windings connect at any one time and that will give just a few different speed options.

Make sure you know what you are doing, this is mains voltage, so please ensure all is dead while you connect it, and you energise it from a safe distance in case it goes wrong, and the motor is fixed down to a solid base before you apply power.

And people wonder why the Health and Safety at Work Act came into being
Not for DIY though.
Health & Safety don`t want to interfere with darwinism - Surely this is natural selection working............

If they managed to legislate against stuff like this, such demented thinking would be pushed "out of sight" - some might not even produce their "death-defying" inventions; and may live to procreate.

We`d end up with more of these "off the wall" ideas than we have now!!!!!! :tongue in cheek :coat

As this is not relating to anything concerning the daily duties of a typical electricians work, or BS7671 or similar regulations, I have move it to the DIY section. I think it is safe to say that whilst what you are trying to do may be feasible it is not recommended and is not a procedure that the forum would suggest you continue with. There are electrical and mechanical issues that I suspect cannot be safely resolved over the internet.

As you're someone who will obviously "have a go" and I can understand that, then I can recommend the "Workshop Practice" series of books - No's 16 and 24 (13 & 18 on the Amazon list). Masses of info about reusing old motors but as others have said not something you want to be going into casually!
