I keep hearing that HS2 will create thousands of jobs because people will will be rocketing up and down the country like guided missiles.

The construction will create 25 thousand jobs  ....apparently .. but those would disappear when its finished .

So how does the fact that Londoners can get to Birmingham 20 minutes quicker  create thousands of jobs I ask ?       Because there 'aint none here .

It's going straight through a new housing estate that isn't even finished yet.  I'll bet the builder won't be able to sell any more on that estate now it has been on tv.

You’re all missing the point, it’s not about moving people quicker. UK manufactured products can wing their way quickly and cheaply to the vast european open market.

I think there may be a slight flaw in my reasoning………

Ah yes Tony, what manufacturing?

Yes Tony ..    and.What open market ?

We;re all gonna be train drivers by the sound of it .

I really don't get why people need to be rocketing up & down the country at 200 MPH  and will somehow be creating wealth & jobs .  It the answer to all our problems .

Are goods cheaper though , Sharpie ?   Property is certainly cheaper .

Petrol here for instance is   119p  / ltr     or £5.35 /gallon.

A gallon of ale in Birmingham would cost £ 22.96

Oh sorry you're right deke, so perhaps the idea is that the rich southerners will buy all the houses and pay you all to renovate them at the cheaper rates?

You have to understand this HS2 is a politicians answer to closing the ever increasing gap between north and south, cos they'll say it's not as wide as it was cos we can get there quicker!

The only reasons I can think of are.

1. A big infrastructure project to employ people til the economy picks up.

2. Get cars off the road.

3. A horrifically expensive political and bureaucratic balls up of the highest order.

Give that I'm about 7 hours drive from it's Northernmost point I don't really care. :)

it's a status project for the UK, ie come to Britain we have really good trains. Basically bragging rights!. Now good transport is good thing for business, it does encourage busy CEO types to use different areas of the country, but I can't just help feeling the money would be better spent on improving what we have already.

I can’t help but think that if the French were to build the line it would be half finished by now. Five years from now we’ll still be listening to the NIMBY’s rambling on in the endless public enquiries.

Draw a straight line and to hell with who it upsets.

Can they extend it to the Highlands?  Straight through my house please.  Compulsory purchase at full value would solve the problem of not being able to find a buyer for it.
