Hi All

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction:

Ceiling Rose on a landing - switched from ground floor and another on the landing

Two cables from the ceiling - one contains Green/Red, the other Green/Black

Switch on the landing has Common, LI and L2 and is wired Red L1 and Black L2.

New light fitting had Live, Neutral and Earth.

I think this is called a loop switch, so I bought a new fitting for the light that has Neutral, Live and Loop. But how do I wire it up?

any help appreciated

md

Post a photo of the existing light. Don't disconnect ANYTHING until you have documented exactly how it was.

You should not need to change anything at the light switch.

I would say both greens to light fitting E, red to L and black to N

but your description of the cables is confusing, do you realy mean you have two cables, each one being a 2 core cable?

sounds like it is wired in older double insulated singles. So yes, one with red and green, other(s) black. Sometimes you find blacks with earth and sometimes not. The fact that you only have 2 makes it easy. As mentioned above, black to N, red to L and the greens are cpc (Earth).

That is, unless the property is wired backwards :innocent

Thanks for all your responses. Computer says no ! Must have 10 posts to post a link on this forum...

Yep...two cables in white sheaths.

If its white sheaths then it sounds like *******ised twin and earth.

Is the earth sleeved or insulated?

I would hazard a guess that the light also has a borrowed neutral.........feed from ground floor switch, switch wire from upstairs switch, neutral from upstairs circuit. I may well be wrong.....see present wife for details

Just guessing...

Just put your red in the 'L'ive, Black in the 'N'eutral and green/yellows in the 'E'arth. leave the loop unused.

(the earth wires are bare conductors that are sleeved not insulated)

Looks to me like the earths are not insulated BUT. Over sheathed with green and yellow earth sleeving AND if you look closely the cut on the side of the sheath is at an angle. I would wager a slap up tea at Mrs miggins pie shop that if you pull back the sheath ( ooooh errr missus ) that the ' other' conductor will be lurking beneath

Just being Sherlock Holmes ...
