hi everyone ,

A shop i'm working in has 4 ceiling speakers that the customer wants to connect an ipod to .

So the question is , does she need an amp with an ipod dock ,and if so how do you connect the 4 speakers to the amp.

are the speakers not currently connected to an amp? if not are the speakers 110v line as this tends to be the case with alot of commercial pa systems.

either way you need the correct amp to suit your speakers and then a 3.5mm stereo jack to whatever the inputs are on the amp typically phono or xlr

If these are conventional passive speakers (not powered), and might be a good idea just to check if they are 6ohms-8ohms, if so you can usually connect them in parallel e.g. one pair on the right channel the other pair on the left channel, you could use the headphone 3.5mm output into a matched input with 3.5mm jack to RCA phono lead as has been suggested

Also check out the Sonos ZP120 I use these a lot in multi-room setups, could be perfect solution if speakers have a reasonable frequency range, if you need a good trade source just ask and I'll post up the details

Whilst it is nothing to do with you just remind her that if she plays music in the shop she will need a license from PRS (Performance Rights Society) or she will end up getting suedd by them.

don't forget you also need a licence to broadcast radio too :)

depending on the setup she might get away with a boggo hi-fi system to run it or a cheap lilttle amp will work lovely, either get one with an ipod dock or use a simple interconnect with a 3.5mm jack on either end.

You won't be able to power the speakers direct from the i pod. I did a job like this last week in a gym with 10 speakers. Used a mono 50w PA amp and bought a disc/i-pod dock/dab stereo from Argos (forgotten what make) Amp was 4 ohm and speakers were 8 ohm so worked out a combination of series and parallel connection to keep the total load to 4 ohm. The stereo was connected via its 3.5mm headphone jack to the amp, A mic was connected to a second input and one of the many Tv screens was connected to the 3rd input via its 3.5mm headphone jack.

By using a PA amp the different input volumes can all be adjusted and 50w RMS on a balanced system puts out a good volume. 2 speakers were in 2 different shower/changing rooms and had to put a pot on those speakers to drop the volume. Only suitable pot i could find was 10 ohm so total load was 2ohm over.

The stereo was an extra asked for by the owner as originally i was leaving just a 3.5 jack for the I-pod. Probably could have used just that from the headphone socket without an amp, but would have had no Tv or mic.
